well i got the carb running good so this morning i went out to set the timing and the is smoke coming out my defroster ducts. any clue what would cause this? we are getting new plates for it next friday and i cant wait to get her back on the road and now this.

Smoke??? Is it possible that you have water vapor and not smoke? You may have popped a pinhole in the heater core, and It's basically steam and not smoke. If you don't have a visable exhaust leak under the hood and the strong smell of exhaust gas, I'm bettin It's the core. It's pretty common for them to go at this age. Good thing is, their very cheap to buy and available at most parts stores.

thats is what i was thing. i didnt think it could be electrical. i will have to go to work and see how much one is. i will probally have to take the hole heater box out wont i?

new one will run you about 60 bucks, and yeah, you have to pull the box.

Wasn't there a core upgrade? I think you can use a chevy blazer core that blows harder and puts out more heat, And if not mistaken pretty much a bolt in.
this is a quote from a site on this upgrade:[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica][FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica]The Chevy heater motor works great--hot on high , with a bolt on deflector seal up and heater box, keep the jeep toasty

If you switch - a 73 chevy blower motor out of blazer works

Before I went to all the trouble of changing out the core, I would just bypass it to see if it is the problem... :)

You should see antifreeze puddling in the floor soon if thats your problem.:( The blazer blower motor upgrade is easy Ive got it on mine it was about $20 good time for it:chug:

went out to move it to wash it. know its not doing it. wierd.

The misterious "smoke", did it smell like maple syrup? If it did, then it's definately your heater core. Keep an eye out for a green puddle on the passenger floor, it may not be a big leak. But, like CJ said, try bypassing it first and see if it (the smoke) comes back, it may have been the fan motor smoking, and not antifreeze vapors.

my nose is so plugged up right now i cant smell :censored:. it hasnt done it all day again. but it is a 30 year old core. i was hoping i didnt have to change that stuff until i got a new body lol. o well

went out tonight and it did it again. now i can smell it smell like antifreeze. im going to block it off till this fall and get a new heater core and do the blazer motor upgrade and the mods continue lol.

lol..ya i figured that out along time ago. tonight i went out and blocked of the core and i am pretty sure that is the problem. let it run for ten minutes, let it get up to temp and no steam. :D now hopfully nothing goes wrong with her until friday when i get the new plates so i can drive her again. i have only drove it a couple of times since the lift and just around the block with the new carb. i cannt wait to get her out and stretch her leggs.

You know, the heater cores on CJ's usually give out because of bad coolant. I had one in my CJ for about 15 years when I religiously kept the coolant vs antifreeze ratio correct. As soon as I let it go, it corroded and leaked! :(

that sucks. i changed the antifreeze last summer. but the antifreeze i took out was nasty and probally what amc put in at the factory. it was nothing but rusted brown foamy lookin stuff. flushed the system put a new t stat in. surprized the water pump still works. ( knock on wood )

Hello gtbyrd and welcome! :chug:

It's not difficult at all. It's really just take it apart and reverse the order to put it back together.

before i rebuilt my motor it had quite a bit of blow by so my dad took the hose that runs from the front hole in the valve cover off of the air cleaner and let it run down the side of the block to keep the oil out of the breather. im telling you this because all of that smoke that was coming out of that house was blowing right though my vents. i don't know how yours is setup but you might want to check to see if that hose is connected to your breather
