I have been looking at doing a spring over axle lift on my jeep and have heard that i need new spring perches and shock mounts. Why is this? What is wrong with what is on it now?

because you have to move the spring perches to the top side of the axle in order for the axle to have a place to sit underneath the springs. you will also need the shock mounts to relocate the shocks. you will also set your pinion angle when you weld on new perches

Depending on the drive shaft length, you may also need to install a drive shaft with a CV joint. You'll also need a ladder bar (bam bar, traction bar or whatever it's called) to prevent axle wrap.

Not to mention the steering modifications that will need to be made.

alright so in your alls opinion which is easier/ cheaper/ better. a SOA or just a regular lift kit

Forgot about the high steer.

Spring under is easier and probably cheaper in the long run because a GOOD lift kit is all inclusive. The lift kit company did all the homework for you already and should be able to provide everything you need for a truly bolt on solution.

this is true but if you really have your heart set on soa and got some cash i found a really nice bolt on setup at
Spring over axle lift for Jeep CJ 5, CJ 6, CJ 7, CJ 8, Scrambler
seems well thought out but a little pricey

I'd be leary of that with a drag link bent like that. They bent the drag link to get around a high steer. That would probably be fine for a mall cruiser but I can see it bending like a pretzel off road.

but why would i need to replace the shock mounts. they would have the same amount of travel since it it on the spring plate and its just flipping it over. that doesnt change the travel of the shock

Because when you do a spring over axle lift you're moving the spring plate to the TOP of the spring pack. This moves the lower mount up about 5 inches which shortens the shock.

What you can do though is make a new shock mount that welds to the axle. All you need is some box tubing and cut one side of the box off (making a C).

makes sense to me. didn't think about that

but when you flip the spring over it moves the frame up the same amount so it should still have the same travel

A regular lift kit is easier and cheaper.
You need to go high steer with SOA, Z bars are just dangerous.

the z link setup rocky road sells is an option but they also sell the high steer setup.

I know when i go with a SOA im doing the rocky road with the high steer for my 7 just because its all bolt on and im not wleding inclined :D
