I am looking for tires and wheels for a rebuild... 85 cj 2.5 inch Old Man Emu lift and 1 inch body lift, I was thinking 31 or 33's... does anyone know of a good source for great pricing on packages.

I saw someone posted very positive comments on Treadright, but they didn't have a 33https://www.treadwright.com/p-9-31-10-50r15-warden-a-t.aspx

Will a 16 inch tire fit a cj or should I stick with a 15 inch?

thanks

Either get your tires locally to avoid shipping or go to National Tire & Wheel. That's where I got my SuperSwampers. Good prices

I just bought some awesome wheels and tires w free shipping and free mounting and balancing from Discount Tires Direct. They even give a military discount.

Yes you can get bigger wheels than what the factory put on. Larger rim sizes are getting very popular. Bigger rims help on-road handling by reducing flex. But we are talking about a jeep. It will never handle like a sports car. Having big tires and without going too big on the rim size will help off-road. There you want the flex. There's a saying for off-road tires: "You want more rubber than steel" You want the diameter of the tire to be at least twice the diameter of the rim. In other words never go to a 20 inch rim unless you plan on using 40 inch tires.
So the short answer is, yes 16 inch wheels will work just fine.

I have been shopping for weeks looking at a ton of options and 15" rims are getting harder to find. In a store for sure, online not as bad. Looking for a 15 x 8 with 5-5.5 was not super popular and was often disappointed when I found a rim I liked only to see it didn't come in my size.

I have not purchased yet but found good prices at both http://www.americastire.com and http://www.4wheelparts.com

Watch the shipping when ordering online and tax too.

is this the same thing as a 31" or a 33"?
305/70/16 is a 33x12.5x15 equivalent. To go 31" you can go 245/75/16 which at 30x 9.5 is a touch smaller but more common than the 265/70/16 which is real close to a 31x10.5x15. A 265/75/16 = 32x10.5x15. 285/75/16 = 33x11x15

The metrics don't match up exactly with the flotation sizes and they can vary some by manufacturer. But that is true of the flotation sizes in 15", too. Very very few of the 33x12.5x15's are much more than 32" or 32.5" tall and most 31x10.5x15's barely crack 30"s, for example.

A really good size for a mildly lifted jeep IMHO is 235/85/16 ( 32x9x15).

thank you for this info that really helps... just to confirm with the first portion 305/70/16 is a equivalent to a 33x12.5x15 or 16?
thanks again, the conversion is a night mare and with shipping being so expensive I would hate to make mistake.

Then get a 305/70/16.
At the risk of sidetracking this thread, I usually think metric measurements are logical. That is except for tire sizes.
Tire size: 305/70/16
It's that 70 that gets me.

If I asked "How big is that box?" Who would say "it's 305mm long, 16 inches wide and it's height is 70% as high as the box is wide"

"70% ?! ?, why can't you just tell me how high it is?"

okay, sorry, rant off.

Those tires and wheels will fit your jeep.
:chug:

Yeah the metric sizes are for 16" rims. I listed the comparison tires as the 15" inch versions as most people are familiar with them. As BusaDave said: If your jeep would handle a 33x12.5x15 than the 285/75/16 will fit just fine with the rims he suggested.

BusaDave: I agree that the metric sizes are harder to understand and the confusion is the aspect ratio listed as the middle number. The biggest issue is that many swear the lower the aspect ratio the wider the tire which would mean that a 265/70/16 was wider then a 265/75/16. It just isn't true. Each is 265 mm wide. The aspect ratio only effects height. It is the measurement of the sidewall height exspressed as a percentage of the width which is the first number. So to get the height you take the percentage of the first number, double that as there is a sidewall above and below the rim, then add the rim diameter. The fact that you have to multiply the aspect ratio by 2 to get the height is weird. I found it easier to memorize the conversion sizes of the popular metric sizes to avoid doing the math when talking about tires.

Goodyear is offering a rebate of 160 bucks off MTR. My 33s ended up costing me right around 700 bucks because of it. Hard to beat that on a name brand tire.

I picked up 285/75/16 Wrangler Duratrac last winter.... LOVE those tires... They are beasts in the snow and excellent both on and offroad! Discount Tire is a good place to hit up..
