Hey Guys,

So my front Drivers side spring pack has shifted (the stack) forward... I will post a pic later today, but basically most all of my springs are ending up front with the front shackle. So I have 4 or 5 springs ending up front and the thickness of 4 or 5 springs up front, and 1 or 2 in the back only... Causing my ride (obviously) to be affected.

Basically I believe center bolt has sheared.:cool:

Question is: Can I simply get a new bolt, and re stack centered and bolt it back through? Anything I should be aware of while doing this?

I plan on replacing ring and pinion soon in the front, so will have them off already (removing front Dana 30 to work on it off the jeep)

Any link to the right bolt, would also be appreciated :cool: :notworthy:

I agree, sounds like the center bolt. Yes you can replace it, see if there's a local spring builder in your area.
I've heard of people using a grade 8 bolt also, but I'd look for a center bolt myself.
 
You would have a hard time with a generic bolt grade 8 or otherwise. The head is small and round like an allen head and may actualy be one I can't recall. Your U bolts must have been loose too for this to occur?
On a similar issue I have been having some issues with my springs wandering a bit sideways and since the second one is military wrap it gets real close to the hanger and may even rub in certain cases?

When you get your new center pins, make sure you check the diameter of the old pin first cause they vary. I got new pins for the springs on my 75 from my local NAPA. Seems to me they were only a couple of bucks a piece.

So only way i would need a new spring pack, is if the holes are "ob-longed" correct?

Will be nice to remove the sag from the drivers side... :cool:

Sasquach, Should i be fine just ensuring they are tightened back up? or do you think I should replace them (u bolts)

As for your sideways wandering, My uncles was doing this, we went to a local spring shop, and purchased some extra "clips" that hold them better side to side. If it's wandering at the eye though, that would mean you need some new bushings right?

I have read were you should not reuse U bolts but i do not buy that storey much, if they look good use them.
I would be surprised if the bolt was able to oblong the spring hole but you will have to see, also would think if it was minor it would not mater much once you get it all back together and held firmly in place with the U bolts

thanks for the tip on the clips, My bushings are not the problem but the #2 spring also partialy wraps the bushing and if it moves sideways it gets close to rubbing either the shackle or the hanger on the other end.
 
The center bolt keeps the spring pack in alignment during assembly to the axle. (locates the axle with the head of the spring bolt). What really keeps it there is properly torqued U-bolts.

Broken is really bad! :oops:

Got all new u bolts made and new center bolts...

Apparently ive been neglecting these u bolts and center bolts bacause bot front center bolts broke, and rear drivers is loose...:eek: All u joints seemed tight...

Anyhow, i figure this may have been one of the major problems with stability & steering huh?
 
Most likely your source of instability. :D
