Hello Fellow Jeepers,
1974 CJ5 , no power steering. I just replaced the knuckle that attaches the steering box short shaft to the steering wheel shaft. When I got it all back together the two square bearings are just barely under the rubber boot and lock ring. The steering and all works as advertised, but it seems to me that the bearings should be deeper down in the bell-housing. Is this the normal position for the bearings? I cannot find anywhere that specifies how deep or shallow they should sit. Also, does anybody know of a good online site that covers jeep repairs (free is good)? I have Alldata on my computer, but it only goes back to 1982. Thanks.

They need to be in as far as you can get them. The steering shaft will expand if you drill out the plastic pins. You may be able to push the steering wheel into the column a little. That will push the lower shaft into the coupling further.

I have the complete factory manual on my 72. I haven't scanned in it all yet but I have uploaded several chapters to our document section. Your 74 should be the same.

I just uploaded the steering section for you. Just ask when you need more information. :)
