Hey guys,

Uncle has a crack in the OEM power steering mount on his 72 CJ5 .

After some searching, it appears that the only options for replacement are:

Power Steering Gearbox Mounting Bracket Jeep CJ5 72-75 CJ5 1972-1975 CJ

($300.00)

Junk Yard replacement (asking J&W now)

Adapting the MORE one made for 76 and up - like this one

Or build it...

Anyone have different options or any ideas / experience with 72-75 power steering box mounting bracket issues?

:chug:

It would be down to grave yard or build. Price and availability of used would play a big part from there.

I do not see adapting the MORE to be anything worth trying.

I think those bracket mounts are quite a help in holding things together, but I would suggest first using the brace and see how it holds up prior to spending the big bucks. The one you sent in a pic of looks pretty tough.

We'll we found him a mount in the junkyard for $120.00. At this point I think we'll try our luck being the poorman's MORE. We'll get some 1/2" steel and 3/8" steel and get to trial and error.

Has anyone ever seen a schematic showing a drawing etc for these?

We have the old one intact still, so no biggy if not, just wondering.

JR....Personally I would not mess with that old stock stuff......but since ya got it make sure you fix all the holes and cracks in the frame rails........I would also add a good brace to the other side frame rail.........will eliminate most of those issues.

Yes I think he's planning to brace it like I have -

He had the "welded bar with exhast clamp" one on there for a while, as I did before I upgraded

He just did spring over yj spring conversion, and the flex was a bit much for the brace I think...

By the way that's some sweet work there Tarry!

I don't understand why flex would matter with a brace from the box to the other frame.

Well it took me 25 yrs of thrashing on the con n sierra trek to knock mine off, but I couldn't see payin someone else to build something I could do better n last longer, I used what was left of stock bracket n the box to get my measurements, little paint . Along with building the new bracket I reinstalled the brace I made years ago( I think it had a lot to do with the stock bracket lasting as long as it did) that goes around the base of output shaft to right frame rail . Its about 4 beer, 3 wrench, 1.5 hour build,,,,,, olllllo

You're right it doesn't really, but the frame still twists quite a bit, and the new suspension lets him get into places he didn't before which it twisting it more lol

That's my BS theory :D:D

In all reality, you're right, pretty much nothing. The "brace" we were using though tended to break on both of ours quite often. The new one I have (that I posted) has not even thought of breaking yet ;)
