My rebuild kit for the Ross showed up so I got started pulling it out tonight. Anyone ever get the thing out without pulling the exhaust? It's a 66 CJ6 with the Dauntless Buick 225 V6 V6, stock forward dump exhaust too. What a pain!

well i got it out! had to cut the exhaust on the driver side to get it though.

Now i am no master mechanic but i am pretty sure water is not suppose to run out of the steering box when you turn it over!

Now i need some help, the worm gear is toast, rusted an pitted so i am looking for a new one. Looking on line i am getting different info from places i am trying to order it from.

It measures 41.75" long. Online i am finding 41.5" but they say it doesn't fit with the V6.

Found this one but sounds too long.
STEERING WORM SHAFT, 42-7/16" LONG, FITS 1966-71 JEEP CJ5 , CJ6 WITH 225 V6 ENGINES

So can anyone confirm the correct length?

:notworthy:

Might be a good time to make that change to a Saginaw Box.

Ha, would be nice but that is still a bit away, sadly.

Talked to the folks at Walck's and they have one that fit the V6, it is bigger than the non-V6 one i understand and is 42 1/2", a smidgen longer so I will have to figure that out when it gets here.

Also found that the new bearings that came in the kit, when the outer one is pressed in it compresses a bit and will need reamed out to the correct size. Suggested again by the team at Walck's.

:)Troy,

I'm curious? When you say bigger. Describe what that is? Are you saying the gear itself is larger in diameter?
A little longer at the steering wheel end should be OK I think...........
And the reaming of the bearings...........or are these bronze bushings? Pretty hard to ream out a Bearing.
:D:D:D:D

Yeah, my bad, bushings.

The guy could never really tell me exactly what was different between the worm for the 4 cylinder and the V6 except that the V6 one was heavier. It is also longer but that is not what makes it the one for the V6.
