Good morning all.

Does anyone know if an XJ power steering box will fit on a 74 CJ5 chassis? Want to upgrade my ride to power steering. Got a tilt column off an 83 CJ7 that I'm gonna need to hook it up to.

Thanks in advance

good morning,

I do not have all the differences in the boxes handy, but I do see that it is a Saginaw like the CJs use, I do see that the XJ uses the later metric hose fittings. That will require you to use different/later hoses. The question from there would be the spline counts on the input/output shaft and im having trouble finding that info right now

Thanks gert,

I should also mention that it is right hand drive so that will limit my optons I think. Don't think I could go with the Durango steering box could I?

Cheers

Which ever box you go with I would think would need to come from a right hand drive, I would imagine the mounting lugs are on the other side of the box to accommodate being mounted to the right hand frame rail but I'm not sure I haven't ever messed with the right hand vehicles

Yes you are right the lugs are on the opposite side.
I have found an XJ power steering box on ebay off a right hand drive 1997 cherokee but don't know if these boxes are any good or not!
Cheers

the steering column spline count is 3/4 and 30 spline on the Cherokee box, I couldn't find anywhere that would list the spline count on the out put so I had to count the splines on a picture and it looks like its 32 spline pitman arm, I personally think it will work it may require the purchase of a few parts to adapt it but I am having to make a best guess. are there no RHD jeeps you can look at over there?

Hi gert, thanks for your reply.

I have ordered the steering box anyway as it was so cheap it would be rude not to lol. I am glad you think it will work, I have heard from a couple of people that it bolts straight on using the the same points but it's not a problem anyway, don't mind a bit of fabrication. Yes I agree I might need to purchase a few more parts but it's going to be a labour of love!
In answer to your question there are very few cj's over here. I personally haven't seen one for years, in fact since I had my CJ7 about 12 years ago I can count on one hand how many I have seen!
When I go out in mine that's why it gets so much attention off people.
Thanks again gert, if you find anything else out please let me know

Thanks torxhead, cool link. Might well be worth going with one of those, seems like a pretty simple solution!

Will let you know the outcome gert...... although it might be a while yet lol.
