Can anybody suggest what would be the best complete steering col. to use for my 76 CJ5 ( Ford, Chevy, Jeep) and also what is the latest year model that will work? I would like to have tilt and the dimer switch on the col.

Thanks,:grinjeep:

I used one from a 96 Cherokee, it worked quite well. I would say any year Cherokee before they started using air bags.

Great, thanks. That gives me quite a fews years to choose from. Does the 96 have the tilt?

It does.:D

and dimmer and wipers on the column.

Can you weld? Or know someone that can?

I did a splice in the steering shaft to mate the 96 to the 77. It was pretty easy stuff.

this may be of interest.

The '96 has a airbag.

I was pretty sure I used a 96 sport Cherokee. Are you maybe thinking about the grand?

Does it have an air bag? That should be a problem right, just no way to wire it. I apperiate the link you sent me. That what I'm trying to do.

IO, Can you help me with a axle question? I'm installing a Dana 30 with disc brakes(77). Will I have any problems with the proportion valve being mine is a 76 with drums. Gear ratio is the same.

The '96 Cherokee that my daughter is driving now has a airbag. But if there is no power going to it it shouldn't matter.

That's what I was thinking. I just want to have tilt, and use the dimmer, wipers and mist from the col.

yes, I think so. you will need a disk/drum and I think a disk drum MC as well.

:)As IO said the Proportioning valve is different from drum/drum to disc/drum and needs to be changed and the Master Cylinder normally will cross over between the two...........so you should be OK.......most are a 1-1/16" bore if you have something different that could be an issue check your part numbers on your existing MC.

IO, when you installed that 96 steering col. did you wire up the wipers/mist using the control on the col.? Did you have to use a intermittant wiper control box. I just want to make sure I get everthing I need.

yes I did, they were not a plug and play like the rest of the wiring and had to be creatively wired. I could not get the intermittent to translate to the Cj wiper motor. but it does have spray/single wipe and high/low speed.

Any other recommendations for compatible steering columns? Mine is a 78 CJ5 . I've heard a rumor that the steering column from old Blazers will work, but I find that hard to believe. I'm planning to go to a junkyard this weekend to look for a replacement column.

Or, is there anyone out there who could rebuild the one I have? Anything I can do to avoid forking out $700 for a new one will be great.

Papa Bear, I have 76 CJ5 that had a steering col. from a 78 Chevy truck thay bolted up just fine. Even the steering col. plug was the same. However I replaced with a col. from a 92 Cherikee because I wanted tilt and the wipers on the col. I paid AMC 150 .00 from a salvage. I ordered a steering shaft from Borg for 300.00 that bolted up perfect. All I had to do is tell them I had a 92 steering col. and 76 CJ5 with power steering and they hooked me up with no problems. Wiper and mist is on the blicker and tilt, uptown. My opinion way better than trying to rebuild. Good luck.

I dont do columns any more but i can help if needed
BUT........pull a part south has a few cherokees

there is a YJ out in conyers at Mitchell's Used Auto Parts
they dont let you back on the yard .....but you can see the jeep from the street and still in decent condition but cant see if the column is there

jody in rockmart have to ask cheapjeep85 for his info

off road atlanta in east point is worth a call as well
ask for walter

what part of town are you in?

Thanks for the advice guys. If I go with a tilt steering column from a Cherokee, would that mean I'd have to get a new steering shaft in order to make it work?

cerrajero, I'm in Chamblee/Dunwoody. Just inside the perimeter off Chamblee-Dunwoody Road. My first plan was to check the pull a part in Norcross since it's nearby. Where are you?
