I am having a hard time mounting my steering column after replacing old steel body with fiberglass body. When I put the column over the shaft, the end of the shaft does not stick out enough to mount the steering wheel. The column mounts do not match up with the pedal assembly holes. Does the column collapse?
Any help would be appreciated

:ww:

is your intermediate shaft already mounted? is it too far up the shaft, keeping the column shaft from going out enough to mount the wheel?

I'm assuming the intermediate shaft is the lower one. It does not look like the upper shaft could slide up any further or it would come out of the lower shaft. The 2 shafts are together but I do not have the clamp that fastens them together tightened, although it seems like they would not come apart easily.
Do you know if the column is supposed to extend or contract?
Thanks again

As I recall, the steering or intermediate shaft will collapse. There is a nylon pin between the two sections, if it has been sheared, then it has been collapsed. You might have to go to one of the aftermarket steering shafts or adjust and redrill the oem shaft.

I had the same exact problem. The shaft that your steering wheel attaches slips inside the shaft that attaches down to the gear box. It wmay take a little work to get them to slip

Some pictures of the problem would definitely help us figure it out right without guessing.

If you put a body lift on, that would require a longer shaft too.

Was the body mounted too far back?

Need more details please.

I had this issue also. The steering column is made to collapse on impact in order to keep you from bring impaled by the steering wheel. And like he said it may take some work to get it to slip back out. Possibly caused by accidentally posing on the steering wheel side of the shaft while the other end was up against a solid surface. Ask me how I know that...
