Im sure that this has been asked but i cant find it. does anyone know if a steering column from any other vehicle will fit well and install fairly easily into a 73 CJ5 .

Would you post a picture of the one you have?? the mount at the dash and the penetration of the fire wall??

Is the question due to a bad column? or do you have one available that you like more?

Here are the pictures of the steering wheel how it attaches to the dash and where it goes through the firewall my biggest problem with my present column is the wheel is huge it sticks out too far and it is at a bad angle the other problem is that it is ugly. I know that some modification/fabrication will be involved but i would like something that looks like it should be there

I put a tilt wheel in my 77 out of a 97 Cherokee. It was quite easy. the cherokee column is quite similer to the GM column sells for a bunch of bucks. how much fab are you willing to do?? I suspect come cutting and welding. can you do that??

Can you post the distance in inches from the wheel to the face of the dash, the distance from the dash to floor board and the length of the stub out in the engine compartment. just to see how close the length is.

because you have a dash mounted ignition switch which is GM (roughly pre 1975) but the dash mounted was continued in service vehicles ( bread trucks, delivery trucks) far past 1975 that give you a wide range of vehicles to choose from....its the match-up of the "splines" that im not qualified on... IO should be able to point you in the right direction...also CJ has a 1972 if there is anybody that can get the answer.......someone within the same year.......

From the wheel to the face of the dash is 15.5" from the dash to the firewall is 17" and the stub sticking out the other side is 2" the cutting and welding isnt a problem and i plan to update all of the wiring with a painless harness so the key on the column and the different turn signal wiring shouldnt be a big deal.

It is do able. the over all is 2.5 inches longer and there is 6" through the fire wall. you will need to "adapt the splined coupling on the original steering shaft, between the steering column and the steering gear box. Thats part of the cut and weld I mentioned.
the only trick is to make the shaft the proper length.
The big question is How does the original mount at the dash. the Cherokee mounts to the pedal assembly /dash/tub cowl.
what is the diameter of the column through the fire wall??

i picked one up from a 93 cherokee today and it looks like it will work with a little modification thanks for the idea about the cherokee if you have any tips or pictures that might help with the install to pass along i would appreciate it.

I finally got the column mount done here is a couple pics i am using the mounting bracket from the column and had to cut off the firewall mounting flange and rotate it and for the steering shaft i am using half of the cherokee shaft on the column and i am going to modify the original shaft to slip inside it
