So I recently bought a steering coupling for power steering. I thought it was the correct part but I found out over the weekend that the PO was a dumb *** and didnt do the conversion correctly. So basically I have a PS pump that does nothing becasue I have a manual steering gear box. I have no idea what my column is though. Iv looked online and found that you have either a power steering column or manual steering column. Whats the difference? If I have a manual steering column, I will just have to retun the coupling I bought and get a manual steering coupling, but if I have a power steering column, I will have to either buy a power steering gear box ($$$$$) or a manual steering column and return the power steering coupling for a manual coupling. WTF, the PO is a retard. He is the whole reason Im in this position because he used a power steering coupling and tried to make it fit the manual steering gear box which almost killed me going down the road last fall.

Can anyone help me by letting me know what the difference is between a power steering column and manual steering column. I know the PO said he replaced it but never told me what he replaced it with and I didnt know there was a difference if there is. thanks.

IF you still have the factory column, then the only difference is the bell coupler at the box. The internals of the bell coupler are the same, regardless of manual or power.
The difference in the bell coupler is the p/s box input shaft diamater and possibly the spline count.
IF you still have the factory column, then to convert to power steering would require:
p/s pump, brackets, pulley, belt
p/s box
p/s pitman arm
p/s bell coupler
All other components would remain unchanged.

Maybe some pictures of your column and shafts would help us help you.
Even if it's a later model tilt column of some kind, the changes I've listed above should still be the only changes needed.

Agreed with last said.
The column should be standard spline GM.
The steering shaft to the box will need to be adapted.
Yes, the power box and manual box use a different spline count and diameter.
I have a stock CJ manual steering shaft and manual box if you need.

Ok, so I'm getting somewhere with this. More and more issues seem to be coming up.

1st question, how can I id my gear box. The only legible number on there are a large 92. It has 3 mounting holes, and all gearboxes I’ve seen for a 76 CJ5 have 4. So this leads me to believe this is a different gearbox.

2, I bought a bell coupling to attach my power steering gearbox to my intermediate shaft. The coupling is far too large for the gearbox I have.

3, the old bell coupling I have is tone up. A buddy of mine brought in an extra manual bell coupling to see if that matches my gear box which is clearly a p/s gearbox, and while trying to put it on it looked like we started to damage the splines on the coupling. This looks like what happened in the first place. The po must have used a manual coupling for this and forced it one which in turn damaged the splines and caused to ware very quickly.

4, if I just say screw it and use my old coupling, put it on my gearbox and drill a hole and use a pin or bolt or something to keep it from moving, will that work and save me the trouble running around trying to find the correct part even though I rather get the correct part.

I just want to get this done so I can dust off the cobwebs and get it on the road since the weather is getting nicer. Let me know your thoughts and if anyone can help me id this gearbox.

PS is there are markings on it, either let me know or drop me a pic of location and what it could and should be.

It sounds to me like someone grabbed a PS box from a GM car.
All jeep boxes should be 4 hole.
My opinion! NO to the pin idea. it will not last long, especially offroading.
Count your spline on the box?
Measure to box input diameter?

We might be able to figure out the Borgeson joint you need to adapt!

New to adding pics. I dont know how to resize but if you click on it it should pop up in a new window. Let me know if this helps. Thanks.

see above
add the steering gear to pic request
:D
OK, so If someone used a GM box, is there any difference in the input shaft dia. Jeep only used a 3/4 input shaft dia for manual and 13/16 input shaft dia for power. So why is it that I have a power steering box that measures around 0.715 in and is a power steering box. All I honestly need is a bell coupling that will fit my current box so I can drive it. I do however have a box out of a J10 but again I dont know what bell coupling I need or if I will have to replace my intermediate shaft.
