Hey guys I have a 82 scrambler that the gear box is way loose on it. I've already tried adjusting it in. I'm to the point that it is starting to bind up. Is there anything else that my gearbox might be on? I'm hoping to find one in the bone yard cheaper than what a new one will cost. Would one off of any 80s or 70s AMC work? Any other makes and models? Thanks guys for any info.

It looks like the wagoneer and j20 (with the manual coupler) should work. No experience, just internet research. Just go '79+

Check the welds on the steering box cross member to see if they have cracked. You might want to consider a rebuild also.

If you have to buy new, you may want to consider a box from an H1 or J20 that has a variable ratio.

Someday I hope to make the upgrade.

First mistake there is no adjustment...........that is a bearing & gear pre-load only on top for the sector shaft , hardly an adjustment to fix a worn out gear box...........
That's a Saginaw 800 series HD gear box and should have a 13/16" dia. x 36 spline input shaft.........there should also be a large 6 & 7 cast into the housing near the front bottom of the box..........standard GM passenger car box in the 60's that AMC used in the CJ's..........as mentioned a variable ratio gear box is better suited for the short wheel base CJ.........PSC steering in Texas can rebuild it or help you.
