I am new to the threads and am looking for help with my 74 CJ5 . When i purchased it it had a 4" lift and 35" BFG MT's. The steering is horrible and I have replaced the tie rods with HD ones( 1 1/4") and am going to buy a HD steering shaft. Does anyone have advice on what else i can do? Thank you for the help

Check out your ball joints and suspension bushings. Also if it hasn't been done already, I would highly suggest a steering box brace as the stock settup will move around trying to turn bigger tires.

Also keep in mind some aftermarket springs will affect castor, causing steering wander. shims will fix this.

The steering box brace is a real good idea and cheap to boot.:D

For a 74? All the braces I have seen are for those crappy stamped 76 and up mounts, not for the cast brackets on 75 and down CJ's.

Thanks everyone for the help!! It is greatly appreciated. I am currently trying to track down a brace that will fit on the 74. Not sure if i can modify one for the 76 and up brace or continue looking!

I've got a metal rod welded to the inside passenger frame, and a muffler clamp welded to the other end and fastened around the bottom of the steering box.

Not "correct" but it does the job for now.

Have been looking into these: Power Steering Gearbox Support Bracket Jeep CJ5 CJ6 72-75 CJ5 1972-1975 CJ

Unless I have misunderstood and you guys are talking more about the mount...

That's what we were talking about, that is the first one I have ever seen for an intermediate CJ. Nice find.

It's not the brackets that fail, its where the brackets are bolted to the crossmember.....thin stamped steel. A new bracket wont cure this unless it has additional mounting points to the frame. The only way to stop the gear box from sloshing around is the use of a brace extending over to the opposing frame horn.
I built mine using some roundstock, exhaust clamp, a piece of bracket, and some welding.
