I just finished my rebuilt and now I was cleaning the garage and had a left over.

The pain i . t. a.. I had getting the steering colum back in place, because everything was so tight, let me think that this part should be part of the steering.
Can anybody help me?
Where does the part belong to? I found no sparepart list or photo which give me some hint.

Thanks a lot
Frank

On my '86 it is located on the other side of the column mounting bracket. It is not pictured in the Jeep CJ factory service manual M.R.252, but the mounting bracket is and its location. Another description of the mounting bracket would be the main bracket support that holds the column in place located under the dash. The part in question mounts just on the other side of the mounting bracket.

okay!
Thank you. But do I need this part, I already opened the dash a bit for propper fit.
What it does: it lowers the column about an inch, and I will get a different ancle with the steering shaft. I have a borges shaft with no problems with the different ancle.

Thanks Frank

You'll need it if you don't want to get impaled on the steering column during any sort of hard frontal impact.

IIRC (and it's been a while), there is another bracket that has two die-cast areas that this bolts through. When the impact happens, the steering column breaks those, the column drops down, and in addition to the splined steering shaft: Everything collapses.

The engineers designed all this using the angles of the stock steering column. Mess with the angles, the amount of impact necessary to collapse the column, may either increase or decrease. Pre-AirBag tech brought to you courtesy of the 70's... :D
