Hey Everybody,

So I recently disassembled the upper portion of my tilt steering column on my CJ5 . Ever since I bought it, the entire upper column was loose, rattling in all directions. I was successful in tightening it down, but now it take a good amount of strength to turn the steering wheel.

Because I have power steering, I could previously turn the wheel with a couple fingers. Now, it take both hands to turn it. It feels like your parallel parking a vehicle with no power steering, and this happens at all speeds.

Can someone give me some suggestions on fixing this. I WD-40'ed every area of the upper column. It loosened up the steering a bit, but eventually it got worse again.

I appreciate any help you can give me! Thanks!

Well for starters I would suggest removing the steering shaft between the box and the firewall. This way you can see how tight your steering column is.

Start by taking it apart again and redoing what ever you did with the steering column. occasionally turning the wheel as you go. eventually you'll find where you introduced extra bind.
