I was about to purchase a new steering shaft, but now I'm wondering if the problem is in the column. I've attached two photos - one where I'm pointing is the spot that is very loose inside and the whole shaft shakes.

It looks like bearings or something might be missing. Is it possible to replace the bushing or bearing without replacing the column/shaft?

I have a tilt column and I really don't want to give that up!!

Thank you,

Byron, my '80 CJ7 had fewer signs of rust by 10X than does yours, and the bearings inside the steering shaft knuckles were just powder. I know my steering column has issues, as you've observed, but I've replaced the power steering 'box', the steering shaft, the pwr steering 2-piece (POS) mount. Steering went from totally unsafe to good on all roads but Interstate.

I expect good gains from rebuilding the steering column, then further gains from rebuilding the front axle assemblies.

It makes good logical sense to start at the steering column and work down, since you have identified a culprit. I did the reverse, and am pleased with results.

Doesn't matter how good your brakes and engine are, if you can't keep it out of the ditches.

Hope you have similar good result.
