I bought a Grant wheel and went to put it on and the old steering wheel did not have a nut on it. The shaft was messed up on the end(end of shaft is slightly mushroomed and first 2 threads). The wheel did not have a nut on it, it had a hose clamp around the shaft. What is the size nut i need and what is the easiest wat to fix the shaft? I can buy a tap and die set but I need to know what size. Thanks for any help. I don't want to drive the Jeep until I get it fixed. It is a 84 CJ7 .

Sounds like some one tried to hammer whip your wheel off. That does not work, you need a puller. You will need a puller to take the wheel off to chase the threads. and to replace the stock wheel. I would start at the junk yard with a crescent wrench to retrieve a nut from a GM steering column this will tell you what thread you need. I would not worry a lot; the chances of the wheel falling off are zero.

You're not gonna' have any luck chasing those threads, though, till the mushrooming has been fixed. Best way to get THAT done is to turn the durn thing on a lathe. Second best way is to make up a reversed "reamer" that manually "turns" the OD back to size. Even then, it'll be less than fun to chase the threads, 'cause the threads root (the smallest ID part) is now much larger where it was mushroomed, and it'll be SOME TOUGH to get the threading die to start.

Thanks for the replys. I was able to file the sides down on the mushroomed part of the shaft, not getting into the threads. I got a new nut and the threads were not as bas as they looked, the nut threaded right on. Thanks for the help.
