Greetings,
I am currently swapping out my cancerous 1985 CJ tub for a YJ tub, I am a novice at this, can someone PLEASE get me through the steering column removal, any photos or advice would be greatly appreciated. I have removed the steering wheel and the column shroud but am now at a hault.

Thank You in advance,
Michael Reisinger

I live in Bel Air and work in Jarrettsville. Just removed mine last week from an 84 CJ7 . Be happy to help you out! Let me know.

If it's been together for a while it can be hard to separate the splinned connection near the firewall, engine side. I had to disconnect mine at the steering gear box and fish the entire thing up thru my dash. Then I had room to work on it.
There is a bracket right behind the dash holding the column and the two piece plates holding it at the firewall (inside).

The "bolt" that is at either end of the steering shaft goes through a notch in the both the column shaft and steering gear input. It (the bolt) must be removed.

It looks like a simple crush/spline connection, but the bolt actually holds it secure.

Penetrating oil will help, but try not to using a hot wrench unless you are going to rebuild the column. Plastic parts in that lower bearing, FYI.

Even with the bolt removed it can still be rust fused within the splines. A bfh usually persuades it but you need room to swing. Be sure to add some anti-sieze on reassembly.

Gentleman thank you for all of the help, I successfully removed it without problems ..once the bolt in the collar was removed it slid right out without beating it to death..
