Depends on what you want? Just a basic replacement gear box or one that has been re-valved? Personally in a Jeep a variable ratio gear box is Best.

Aftermarket Re-builders Like PSC do a good job or If Tom Lee was still in business I would send you there.

Thanks Tarry99. Im just looking for stock replacement.

Try Rockauto.

RockAuto

Usually pretty good deals.

Pump $40 to $60
Gear Box - $160 to $310

I used a 74 CJ5 with AMC 304 to find the parts as you have a 401 in a newer 7.

Might be different on the gear box... ??

Excellent...This is a great site...Thanks JR74CJ5 :notworthy:
Gearbox is going to coincide with the original equipment, pump I might have to go AMC V8 variety.

Got our gear box from Rock, 33x12.50s, and no problems with turning. I did, however, run a gear box support over to the opposite frame rail for stability.

I did a heavy duty brace from extreme custom fab if i remember correctly... Search here for steering brace and find thread by me from way back. Its a awesome brace. You can do similar but these were large heim ends and large tubing. Lots of adjustment and play the right ways...

Is this a mod or a replacement??

I know you are looking at stock, but I'd still suggest going with an H1 box. Same as stock for all mountings, it doesn't really cost any more, is a little beefier, and it gives you variable steering which really helps.

I built one similar to that...large adjustable heim. It works great.

Interesting. I'll look into that.

While the topic is steering, I just tore down the Dana 30 front axle on my 1980 CJ7 /AMC 304 . The ball joints were corroded to be nearly immovable. Axle u-joints one side completely rigid, other side requiring super-strength to move. Tubes full of mud and sand. Bearings and races weren't bad, but all tierod ends were toast! Now everything built back new, either Spicer or Timken, and moving the wheels only takes eight pounds measured pull.

Thirty-six years is a bit long to ignore maintenance on the parts that keep you out of the ditch!
