59 Willys CJ5 302 V8 C4 Transmision Automatic with Warn overdrive D44 Rear D25 Front Saginaw Steering 32s with a lift
So it's Saturday I have play time now and want to start on the wiring, I run down and get a universal puller for 20 bucks vs. the kit for 50+. I get home take the wheel off and realize the "socket" for the puller is deeper than the stud on my column. I don't have a lot this pay check for toys so i can't get the full on set. So this is my options

1. Take back 20 dollar set and save my money or rent a puller(if they rent them)
2. Say screw it and get drunk...
3. Cut away some of the "socket" so make it fit my stud.

I'm leaning towards 3. Is there another way to get all this stuff out? I'll get some pictures up if need be, but I'm really looking at just hacksawing off an 1/2"-1" of this thing and making it fit.
 
If it is not seized on the shaft, sometimes you can gently alternate tapping at 9 oclock and 3 oclock with your fists to set a harmonic through the shaft. don,t use a hammer, and if it does not come loose within a minute or two, you will have to use a puller.Good Luck and use your play time wisely:)
 
I tried that and it moved a tiny bit but no progress after the slight move. Also I have a "custom" steering shaft, it's welded in the middle, this whole jeep is boot leg as all get up. I'm wondering if this is going to matter?

Well scratch that, just cut off some of the socket and the threads are bigger than the stud, there goes that 20 bucks lol... Well guess electric will just have to wait.
 
Well I found out that piece on the top is an adapter plate and comes off with a 3 claw puller(not proper name but I'm to lazy to read the package right now) I got that off and I took the next few items out all the way to some wires on a piece of plastic, possibly a 4 way blinker set up and now I'm stuck again at the bearing and the lug which is now loose under the bearing and under that is the assembly for the tilt... I'll get some pictures tomorrow I had to quit tonight, hit that point where things were getting foggy and I stripped the tilt nut on the inside can tilt it with a screw driver but that will have to be replaced now. All this to get the dash off, I'm wondering if it would be easier to just remove the steering bar at the base of the saginaw and pull it through the dash. I found an exploded view of the column in the docs, but it doesn't explain much for where i'm at now, it should just slide the rest of the way. Pictures tomorrow after work, any help here is greatly appreciated.
 
Well I was about to reply whith my experience in this area then I checked and remembered you have an earlier model so any advice I have would be little value. Yes what you have is heavily "field modified" as member IOPort might say and your gona have to figure it out as you go it appears.
I will go out on a limb and say in your case pulling the column and shaft out as one may be an option, will averything fit through the dash hole?

if your pulling all this to get the dash off
i believe that it would be easier to pull the whole column than it would be to tear everything down
knuckle busting, frustrating, hair pulling, and new combination of curse words

but i will look in my stuff for info on what you got there
can you take a pic of the other side of the column

Thanks for the input guys, here's what I'm up against now, after breaking, well it was broke I just removed the pieces of the horn plastic thingy(yeah it's the technical term lol)

This is what is left in my column and I cannot figure it out, it's not in the haynes and I found a break out diagram online but it doesn't show this stuff... Either that or I'm blind. So I decided to attack it from the other end and this is my new delima

What we have here is the lower end of the steering and the radiator. Go me... I got a late start today and have an early morning today so this is where I'll stop, but short of removing/moving the radiator I'm open to any other suggestion or knowledge here.
 
Reason you are not finding this in the manual is NONE of it is factory original.
Your early cj had a Ross steering box mounted on the inside of the frame rail about midway beside the engine then a straight steering shaft from the box straight thru to the wheel. It was a very basic arangment and not upgradable to power without redoing the entire system-kinda were your at.
 
Good to know. By shear luck I got the bottom end removed and past the radiator, that is one heavy chunk of metal pulling it out, luckily the wife and daughter helped. Not sure it will go back in very easily lol.. Now I'm on to getting the dash removed, but it is late and I already broke a windshield wiper wire lowering my windshield.

If you dont know what the donor vehicle is :(
when you go to replace these broken parts at least you can match up by sight like sites like Year one or another restoration parts site

or Mylittlecj5s site as well
