I am a new jeeper ... I have a 75 - power steering with the original large steering wheel. I don't need this big *** wheel, plus I'm a big dude, so I need some extra room. Any suggestions on good replacements?

I would get a Grant wheel.

My wife got me one of these a couple of Christmas' ago, it's only 13 1/2" diameter, compaired to the stock wheel that's 16" I think. I gave me a lot more room to get my 6' 2" self behind the wheel. You dont have to spurge on the wood wheel, i think a lot of thier signature series wheels are 13 1/2".

I agree with the other two guys. Putting it on a stock steering column may require some modifications for height. You can get the "jeep" logo horn button which I think is cool. With power steering you will notice the steering being a little sensitive with too small of wheel. Here is mine w/ the flaming river column.

I installed the small diameter wheel and got lucky by finding a tilt column in a trashed CJ7 . That combination made getting in and out of my CJ5 easier.

I'll agree with the above statement about the touchy power steering with the smaller wheel. I had to re-learn how to drive the thing!

CJseek, have you figured out how to make your turn signal cancel wheel work with the wheel adaptor. Just wondering cuz I know a lot of guys would like to use a custom wheel with stock column and have canceling turn signals. mike

CJ seek, I was thinking that the '75 had the directional switch with the little wheel that ran against the base of the steering wheel to cancel after turn. If you have a different setup your good to go. mike

That s the reason I don't have one, I have enough problems with canceling the signal now and most of it is automatic.:D

seriously.

the tilt wheel from an XJ is pretty much a plug and play. For the life of me I can't understand buying a flaming river when XJ columns are so easy to come by. And the horn button says Jeep.:D

IO, that is great for you folks with later model cj's. I believe the change on the steering column came in the 1976 model year along with a host of other things in that redesign year.Maybe someone with a stock '75 CJ5 can ring in. I have seen many GM transplants on early CJ's and I guess there ok if you like that look. mike

I think you made the right choice on yours it fits in with the high quality of the rest of you Jeep :notworthy:

I know you guys with the below the dash board years have it a bit harder but I guess what I need to say is if you can put a flaming river in a jeep you can put a Jeep column in, they are virtually the same thing.:D

Yea a blazer s10 out of a 91 fits pretty good from what I've read

I hear ya IO. like I said been there done that 40 years ago.I have to admit I have not put eyes on a XJ column so im sure it would be great.Actually there are a LOT of salvage yard columns that would look good in a early cj.Sometimes its not about the money but what you want for your build. Some guys are into rat rods and some are not.No harm no foul.

Guy knew what he had and still charged me only $AMC 150 .00. Plug and play for me. I left him my old column and the original CJ7 wheel off his column, more or less as a "thank you" for selling me his tilt column. He grinned and told me to "come back any time". He retired from one of the AMC assembly plants and has a few items tucked away along with several CJ carcasses floating around on his property.
