I have a 1969 CJ5 in which I'm trying I'm trying to restore. Me and a buddy are trying to remove the body so the frame can be sandblasted. The steering wheel needs to be removed but I am having the worst luck. If someone could provide instructions on how to take the steering wheel off I would be greatful!

Are you using a steering wheel puller? Seems to be the easiest way usually...

The above links to another forum...

Good luck with it...maybe someone who has done it will chime in.

If I can find the instructions in one of my manuals I'll post them.

Normally that would be the case. But with the early cj's there is no provision
for a traditional puller. To the OP what I have done is loosen center nut so that it is flush with end of steering column. Remove turn signal switch from column.
While pulling up on steering wheel( a helper would really help) strike top of steering shaft with nut still flush to the top with a hammer.I like to try hard plastic or brass hammer first. If that doesn't work a good rap with a ball pein hammer should do it.If it pops loose then take off nut and remove wheel. If really stubborn I have had to use a bearing puller "split-collar" positioned under wheel and around column. Then try to attach a gear puller to the split collar with the center screw on the steering shaft. This method may be different than the FSM because I learned at the "School of Hard Knocks"
Good luck on your project. :) Mike

4x4 Machine Products (Mac`s Jeeparts) used to sell a puller kit for all older column; which consisted of a small puller, 3 bolts, a drill bit, a tap, a insert machined for the horn wire a allen wrench & instructions.
But since he passed away it is no longer available, what I use is a bearing separator(flat side towards wheel installed loose) 2 long bolts that fit separator and a 2 jaw puller flat bar. On older Jeeps with wire for horn I used a insert made from a wheel cylinder piston.
That way nothing gets damaged. Pull slow and easy.

I rapped a tie-down close to the center of the steering wheel thu the steering forks that go to outer ring. Rapped another tie-down around the roll bar. Then use a come-along hooking on to the tie-downs and put a LOT of tension on the steering wheel. Then one hit to the steer wheel with a rubber hammer and that baby came flying off.

Sounds more exciting than it was. Everything stayed within inches of its original position. Just very effective & no damage! The old KISS principle.
