I still have a issueIi have to herd it down the road. Having put in new polly bushings tie rods and ball joints bearings and seals. It must be from the box up. What wears out in the steering box and up to the steering wheel. what do you boys figure I should rebuild to correct?

The coupler at the bottom of the steering shaft will wear out. It can easily be rebuilt.

Have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth.. not a lot, just the area that has all the play in it... I could turn mine back and forth about 4 inches and not have anything happening under the Jeep.

Hold your hand on the pitman arm. It is far better to put hands on it, than just visually look for movement while the steering wheel is being played back and forth. You can feel the slightest movement before you see it. If there is excessive play at the wheel with no output from the steering box, it might need to be replaced. As 7D8CJ stated above, the coupling from the steering shaft to the box could be worn out as well.

After debating about replacing my steering box, I swapped it for a reman from a J20 pickup. WOW what a difference. It felt like driving a sports car in comparison to how it used to handle. Its nice to have a jeep that responds to steering imput.!!

good luck

I did the hands on and can not feel anything. I am going to check for toe in. The reman did you have to jury rig or bolt on?

What do you mean, you felt nothing?

If there is someone moving the steering wheel several inches back and forth, you SHOULD feel some substantial movement on the end of the pitman arm. If you arent feeling any movement, then I'd say the box or the coupler needs replacing..

It was an amazing bolt on installation. I heard of potential installation issues, but it was SIMPLE. It used the same coupler as I had (the bell with clip that holds it together.

There are a lot of write-ups about it, but here is the start to finish I went through

What I meant was I never noticed any movement or lack of movement that seemed out of place. Thanks for the upgrade link
