1982 Jeep CJ-8 (Scrambler) with 53,600 original miles. Standard 5 speed manual transmission. Front hubs are manually set to 4 wheel drive.
My 1982 Scrambler has worked fine for many years, but this spring the choke will not release. The unit idles at 1100 to 1200 and will not go any slower. The choke butterfly is only partially open and will not open with assistance. All parts have been cleaned with carb cleaner and oiled. Nothing has improved the situation. This unit has 53,600 original miles, new tires, new fender flares, two year old cab and bed soft top and custom bumpers all around. Please help so I can get it to idle at a normal RPM.

You might have a bad choke spring in there or the choke assembly might be gummed up. See if you can free up the high idle cam on the main shaft.

Ck you main choke adjustment.
Refer to your FSM for details on this.

Serious question... Why would a choke that has been performing properly suddenly need adjustment? That is if it is performing properly and not somehow in need of attention, IE a good cleaning or a broken spring or a corroded electrical connection. After some maintenance I agree, check your adjustments. ..... Well, after some thought I a screw might have loosened up during operation, but there aren't very many of those adjustments on carb.

The heater for the choke spring may have stopped work'n.;)
