could anyone with a stock rear leaf spring setup please measure the full length of the spring following the curve (mine don't have any curve anymore they are flat lol). I broke a spring and don't know if the ones that are on my 78 CJ7 are stock of lifted. It is sprung over and really rusty so I'm thinking stock but I need to know for sure before I get new ones.

I get 48" end to end or 46" center eye to center eye.

I would have to think those would be 2" lift springs, but I can't say for sure.

Darn I was hoping that they were stock since I can just buy used stock springs. I will wait untill someone chimes in with an exact measurement. I know there has got to be a CJ7 out there with stock springs :)

IMO even with a SOA, you should run a 2" lift to clear thoes 38's, unless you did some triming I didn't notice.

well the springs were on it when I got it. It came with 35's. The 38's do rub a little only because the springs are completely flat now. If they are stock springs then that would work just fine. I am just trying to figure out what exactly is on it now so I can go from there.

Your spec's:
38" swampers. 6" suspension lift and 3" body lift, BDS suspension
BDS would be aftermarket and probably not stock

A SOA gives you about 4-5 inches of lift with stock springs, that would JUST clear 35's. But with some trimming you might make 38's but I doubt it.

35's had plenty of room. there is a 3" body lift also. 38"s seem to do fine on there. they barely touch the front rear spring mounts on the trail. Do you think they are 2" lift springs then?

OK, stoopid noobie question.
If both hangers are extended the same length, say 3" bolt to bolt, why would the spring length change?

Just checked mine, and, best I can tell, they're 48" end to end (hard to hold both ends of the dang tape measure.

I was measuring bolt to bolt not end to end maybe that's it? I don't think the spring length could possible change as long as you are following the curve. even if it gets straightened out like mine the length should stay the same. If I measure along the top of the spring end to end I get 47 if I go along the bottom of the spring I get 48. Are your springs stock that are measuring 48?

Can't say for sure if they're stock. They were on there when I bought it, already lifted. From the looks of them, they've been there a long time.

I guess my take on this is: seems like you could do a lift and keep the stock springs. A longer spring (end to end) would have more arch (= more lift?), unless the spring hangers are relocated.

Inquiring minds would like to know.

ok that's my problem too. I'm trying to figure out exactly what they are before I get new ones

Look at the pic's in my album. My rig has 4" springs, SOA, spring reversal and a 1" bodylift. She rides on 38.5"Swampers and 12" wide rims.

definately a lot taller than mine. I was just hoping that I could get some used stock springs for the moment to get her goin again.

Most lift springs I see advertised just say Cj '76 to '85 so my guess would be yes. They have six individual springs in the pack. Yours have how many?
