Need some help on stock shock lengths from all of the CJ gurus here. I recently ordered some new shocks for front and rear. They sent me four of the exact same shock, they are 19.5" extended eye to eye and 12.5" compressed. Went to install them last night and the front shocks went on great, but the rear shocks are not long enough even fully extended.

Turns out that the rear shocks that were on my Jeep are about 1.5" longer than the front shocks. (pretty sure they are stock since everything else on the Jeep was when I got it). Does this sound right? The place I ordered from insists that all 4 should be the same length. Just wanted to ask yall just in case I might have some random mod where longer rear shocks were needed.

Heres a pic of the front and rear I took off and the new shock.

When I took the shocks off of my 1980, I believe all four were the same length.

I will verify this afternoon and get back with you if it's not raining too hard to get in the barn!!!:chug:

Ah yea that storms supposed to roll through here and drop a couple inches tonight. Thanks for checking on your shocks for me.

I think the collapsed length should be an inch to an inch and a half more than the center to center measurement of the mounting studs.

Homepage / Skyjacker Suspensions

this may help, it has the collapsed and extended length and total stroke of skyjacker shocks. and recommendations on what goes with what lift.

Thanks IO, that clears things up. Skyjacker recommends the 13.71 in to 22.58 in ch shock for the rear with no lift, and the 12.07 to 19.07 inch shock for the front with no lift. This is in-line with some measurements I took last night.

So the answer to my question appears to be no, the shock lengths are not the same for front and rear on a stock Jeep.

My '80 CJ7 has after-market Procomp shocks and the rear springs are greatly-curved lift springs. Both front and rear shocks are identical, and look exactly like the rear shock in your photo. It requires almost full extension to reinstall the rear shocks. I would guess that your rear shock set isn't stock after all, but my experience base isn't large, so don't take this to the bank.
