I was wondering if i should use a stock cj tach on my CJ7 . It doesnt come with one so i would either drill a cut out ontop of the wiper switch (stock position) or maybe mount it on my steering column. Any suggestions? Also should i get a stock cj tachometer or should i go with an aftermarket one? Im running a 360 v8 if that matters.

Also, i might get a cj clock too just to keep the original look

Thanks for the help! :chug:

i got a aftermarket one and put it by the wheel.

yea i was thinking about putting that but it wouldnt match my car because i tried keeping everything original. I changed most of the gauges and put the same kinds but newer so it all looks the same

Sounds like you already know you want the stock one.

I say stock. I had mine cut into my stainless steel dash. Looks clean and original. I had to use a MSD Tach adapter due to having an MSD Ignition Module..but thats another story.

yea i was rooting for the stock one but decided to ask maybe because the stock one might not have an option a aftermarket one might, but i guess you guys are right i will get a stock one real soon :D

Thanks guys!

I just put a tach in my 8. I went with a stck replacement tach. It looks good and works well. I thought about puttin git in the original location, but decided to put it on the left side of the steering wheel. If I ever get a clock, I will put the clock in that hole and move the tach to the right. My decision on the side was based on the fact that there was a hole the PO had cut there for his aux lights switch. So by putting my tach there, I reduced the amoutn of unnecessary holes in the dash. As for looking original, it does when the lights are off. But the other gauges in my dash have a greenish light, yet this tach is yellowish.

that looks pretty nice
what rpm does it redline at?

The tach works for 4, 6, or 8 cyl engines and there is a switch on the back to designate the setting. And since the different engines would redilne at different RPMs I suppose that is why there is no redline indicated on the display. Since you hqve a V8 in yours, I don't know at what RPM your engine would redline.

I ended up gettin me a tach and it came with 4 wires. The green wire went straight to the tach, the white wire went to the battery (+), the black wire also went to the battery (-). At first I hooked up the red wire to the battery too just to test it and see if it works.
With that setup, the tach light would stay on even when the car is off! That will drain my battery so i was wondering if there was any specific way to install these without draining battery when the car is off.
Please let me know, thanks!:)

Usual wiring colors are

Red - Switched + (only on when ignition switch is on)
Greed - Neg side of coil
Black - Ground
White - A lamp circuit (on when lights are on)

Who makes the tach? Model #?

I ran the white to the fuse in the fuse box for the dash lights. This will allow the light to dim with the rest. The red went to a fuse that was switched with the ignition. I tied it into the fan fuse. I just tied the black into the wire for my radio that was going to a known good ground. But my instructions tOld me to tiemit into he ground for the other intruments in the dash. Since I had recently installed the stereo, i was familiar with that ground. And yes, the green ran to the coil where it was marked "Tach".

~~~ can you tell me where each one goes exactly?
I can't tell you exactly which wire / fuse to hook up to. You will need a meter or test light to find the appropriate connections. Just foll my and gr8dain connection instructions.
I used these little wire ends that are made to wrap around the blade of the fuse and slide into the fuse slot with the fuse.
Good luck
Trying to connect a Sunpro super tach II to a 1983 Scrambler with the AMC 4 cyl. No action at the tach in spite of correct connections and 4 cyl selected on the tach. Is it a voltage issue or ? The wiring diagram show a tach connector in the harness..where ?
Guidance appreciated
A weak point in wiring up a tach is where it connects to the coil. The oem coil connector is a weak connection at best. It can be replaced with a new one or switch to a coil with nuts on to hold down the wiring. This may not be your issue though.
