I have a Dana 44 up front with a fulltime locker and a Ford 9" with a spool. So far it rocks off road and I'm not a hardcore wheeler. I would like to be able to drive it around town now and again. I'm thinking about air or elockers but not sure I want to spend the money on this drive train. Any suggestions?

I'll trade you my stock axles that will make your jeep more streetable. :D

Lol yep I really wouldn't have traded. I would go with an eaton e locker or you could go with an ARB air locker but the air locker you will have to get a compressor to run it.

44 in front and a 9" in the rear, sounds like a good combo to spend money on to me.
Now if you still had the 20 & 30 I could see your point.

I just hear time and time again that Dana 44 axles are not as strong as Toyota axles. So if I'm going spend 2 grand on lockers, seals, lube, etc, I want to make the right choice. Of course this is from a Toyota guy!

There are a lot of rear ends that are stronger than a Dana 44 .
It's just the Dana 44 was the strongest axel jeep used on their cj's.

I'm thinking something similar on a non-daily driver. I can't afford $2K on air lockers so spools at both ends. I have a question first. Stock 80's CJ7 front Dana 30 has manual locking hubs or no? I was thinking if they are manual locking that solves the problem in the front. If not then I guess not.

For the rear I would just keep the stock basket and diff. If I want to drive around town in the spring/summer I'll just spend the time to put the diff back in. I used to swap in/out my street and drag rears in my Cutlass all the time. I don't mind the work.

Feedback please?

Dana 44 is a 3/4 ton axle, the CJ is a 1/4 ton truck
the Dana 44 has proven itself for over 60 years
tell the toy guys to calm down
what you have now is a spool in the rear? that is what is not streetable, put a auto locker in that, the Dana 44 in the front has a full time locker? like a auto locker? well then that should be invisible unless you are in 4x4, so your only problem is the Spool in the rear.

Thanks for the posts! The rear is a spool and is fully locked. The front must be a fulltime locker because even if I don't have the hubs locked it is difficult to turn on hard surfaces. When I lock the hubs in this Jeep is an animal! I think I could get away with the spool because I don't plan on a lot of highway usage. Thoughts?

If your hubs are unlocked the front carrier type (open or locker) should have no effect on your steering. Are you sure the hubs are completely disengaging?

Thanks BajaEdition for the perspective. I fight myself with what is best case and that will work for what I plan to do. I would love a set of ProRock 60 fully decked out but they are more than I paid for the Jeep.

OK, I thought about my last post. If the hubs are not locked the axles are not engaged. So anything to do with those axles will not effect the vehicle. So CJ I know what you are talking about and I will confirm that the hubs are not engaged. It's troubling that I drove that Jeep for over an hour after getting it home and never thought the hubs were engaged. I never engaged the Transmission so didn't think I was in 4 wheel drive. I have some troubleshooting to do.:D

You got it, I bet the hubs are locked. ;)

My 1980 CJ7 has manual locking hubs in front. I only use them when I'm not getting a bite with the big rear 35's. My experience has been that to put it into 4WD on a bad wet trail down here in the South gets you another 100 yards to where only a pirogue or a buddy's winch will get you back home.

I hear you on that one and completely agree.
