I was having difficulty shifting into 2nd and 3rd gear. With the top of the Transmission removed, I was able to move the synchronizer sleeve forward putting it into 3rd gear, or did I go too far? Now I cannot get it out of gear or put the Transmission top back on because the shifter arm cannot go down that far forward. please see the picture at this link

I would appreciate opinions on what I should do next.

If it were me I'd use a drift of some sort, I like wood dowels, and a hammer to move the sleeve back to the neutral position. Don't beat on it like you are driving rail road spikes. The sleeve should move easily enough that way. The Transmission has ball and spring poppits or a variation of the same that to hold the sleeve in place when in gear. A little pop with a drift should move it along.
