I bought a set of oem steps awhile back for $50. They arrived dirty but in what seemed good condition. Once I cleaned them up, I found that the drivers side was solid and the passenger side was not.

I have sandblasted them and wondering what the best choice of action would be to salvage the passenger one. I am worried that the rot will continue and eventually the step will fatigue. Structurally it seams to be in tact but the rot has eaten away at the passenger side step tubing pretty bad.

Or should I just look for a replacement?

Anyone have a nice Passenger side step sitting around for cheap? :notworthy:

Weapon,

:)You could get another or bend another piece of tubing and replace what you have using the old step...........it is in an odd area to try and do any type of gusset assuming that the tubing elsewhere could also be compromised.

Yeah I am at a loss. I don't want to just do cosmetic work on it then have it eventually fail structurally.

Maybe it is not salvageable but I hate throwing away jeep parts that need some love.

:)Unless you can find another have someone bend up a piece of tubing, not a hard job at all since you have a pattern and it will be as good as new.

I have access to pipe bending tools. What type of pipe should I be looking for. I would rather seam in the pipe then bend a whole new piece.

:)Problem is the whole pipe could be rusted in different places.
There is only a few bends.
Drawn over mandrel (DOM) mild steel tubing, easy to find at most steel house's, check the OD and if you can check the wall thickness on the old piece.
To make a pattern get a piece of thin wall electrical conduit and bend it first.....mark your pattern for the offsets to bend by then transfer those dimensions over to your DOM piece and bend away.............make sure you treat your new piece to some rust preventive.
