hey all-

heres the facts... 1976 CJ5 , OE Power Steering...

i KNOW this is a ridiculous question, brought about by my inability to see the obvious...

i just got my summit racing column here...

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-771712b

and the Borgeson shaft here...

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/brg-000920

heres the problem that i cant seem to solve...

the COLUMN has a 1" DD MALE connection...

the SHAFT is 1" 48 SPLINED FEMALE connection...

how do i make this connection?

i have looked at this adapter

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hdt-sc-218/overview/

but its the OPPOSITE on the DD end that i need...

also, the summit column is actually a GM clone, so it doesnt have the bolt holes that are in the OE column that i have (1976 CJ5 ) for the OE clamshell style connection...

will this style column mount work with the top of the clamshell mount?

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-772815

WTF AM I MISSING HERE??!?!?!!

someone please help me before i start coming unglued.... again...

thanks everyone for understanding my frustration and not holding it against me

mk

First, what is wrong with your column that can not be fixed?
The Summit racing is a street rod column, you need to either weld on nuts, fab or search for a mount.
Wranglers use the 1"DD columns.

its got missing parts, doesn't tilt (which I always wanted), and is in generally horrible shape...

I don't trust my welding skills enough to do any welding on the steering components... too much safety at risk there for me to do... and I don't know any good welders...

my biggest concern is the fact that I cant find something to make the connection from DD to splined column to shaft respectively...

if youre talking about welding nuts to the column for the clamshell connection, I can do that... which I thought about, but don't WANT to do if I can work around it...

thanks for the response GARGOYLEJEEPER...

im going to take it to summit and see if theres something that they can do for me

Texas, You have the wrong U-joint on the end of the collapsible shaft.........either you ordered the wrong parts or they sold you the wrong parts.........the correct U-joint should be 1"DD to 1" DD on the sliding shaft........You can also just order the individual components and assemble it your self......also the shaft you picked has the 13/16"x36 spline going to the steering gear which is fine as long as you have the HD Series 800 Saginaw gear box in your Jeep. Some had 3/4"x30 spline...........need to measure that spline correctly I think it goes about .813"

:D:D:D:D

MK, just like Terry said wrong u-joint or shaft combo. Go to the Borgeson web site and check out the knowledge area.Lot of good info there for any application. No reason not to use after market column.I put a Flaming River in my '69 CJ5 and love it.I do miss the old black jeep wheel a little but i'm getting over it.I myself would stick with borgeson u-joints and not try to use PTO stuff.
The 1/4-20 square head set screws can be safety wired if that is a concern.

good info... but i am taking the GM clone (summit brand) back... not because its not a good unit, but because i decided to go with the iDidit brand... way pricey, but SHOULD bolt right up... i'll post the results when i get everything and see if its gonna work...

if it doesnt, im sure i have 5 gallons of diesel and a lighter somewhere round here... THAT'LL fix it good!
