hello all,
i could really use a few dimensions from you guys... anyone with stock suspension on a CJ5 (1977 or so with a v8) i could use the length from center of your axle to the bottom edge of your fender. im trying to determine the heighth of my lift that i inherited when buyin my jeep. if i could get front and back id appreciate it guys!! also you must not have a body lift... sounds like common sense but you never know!! thanks

Come on, nobody? Anybody with a lift please join in as well, I'll just subtract the difference of your known lift height!

If you are just trying to determine the amount of lift you have then just use a lift/tire sizing chart. This will get you in the ball park, not like there are that wide a variety in lift sizes.

No Lift. Usually a CJ with no lift will take a 31" tire at best. I have seen 33" tires stuffed under though, I would no want to take the Jeep off road this way. I think you will hear a lot of fender rubbing during suspension flex.

2.5" Lift. Seems that this is most common. 33" tires fit good and usually don't hit except with very soft springs. The 82 to 86 CJ7 may be a little more prone to fender rubbing due to the wide-track axles.

4" Lift. The most common size I usually see is 33" to 35" tires. 4" lifts seem to vary in overall lift, so your maximum size tire will depend on your situation.

Thanks for the reply, however, I'm looking for a more scientific way of going about this... I know they say a 33 will fit with 2.5 lift, but they also say thats all that will fit with 4" as well... I believe I could fit 35s, but that's besides the point... So, anybody, can you get that measurement? It can be within a 1/4 in, I don't think it will vary much more than that...

How is the measurement from a stock Jeep going to help you determine if you can run 35's on your Jeep?

Go out and measure the tire clearance on your Jeep and then determine if you have the room. If you are going from a 33" to a 35" then you will reduce the tire to fender clearence by ~1". You should have idealy about 3" of clearence between the tire and fender when on level ground.

The pick below is of my Jeep when I was running a 3" Black Diamond lift with a 1" body lift and ~.5" shackle lift. I was able to fit 35" Goodyear Wranglers, but did have rubbing with the stock fender flares. I later added Bushwacker cut-out flares that fixed the rubbing.

Looking at the pics of your Jeep in your profile I would suggest a 1" Daystar poly lift and some greasable shackles that will net you .5" lift. This should give you plenty of room to run 35's.

I actually have a set of greaseable shackles sitting in my garage if you are interested.
