i was under the jeep putting on our new tierod ends and noticed that there is no swaybars on the front or rear. did old cjs come with swaybars? it doesnt lean when we take a corner or anything. if i wasnt under there i would of never known there was no bars.

some years did come with them, but I don't know when they started.
I have been looking at the ones Currie sells (rockjock??) but the $350 price tag is putting that one on hold for the moment.
I have heard that Wrangler ones will work with some fab, but I dunno.

Sway bars will help dramatically in a panic swerve. Cj's need all the help they can get in on road manners, and a sway bar is a big improvement. My frame is a 78 CJ7 and although the po didn't put it back on, the studs for the brackets are there. If you want, I will take a pic. Just let me know.

I just ditched mine since I didnt wanna shell out another $100 for disconnects. If I feel that much of a difference I'll throw it back on and take the $100 hit , but my 78 CJ5 doesnt have them either.

Sway bars didn't start showing up on CJ's until '76, and I think they were only optional back then. Early CJ's had pretty stiff springs and really didn't need them until the later years (particuarly YJ & TJ) when they started to go with a softer spring rate.

'76+ CJ front spring rate 325lb/in
YJ front spring rate 174lb/in

I believe the earlier CJ's had even stiffer springs. But the 2" spring in the rear combined with the 6" narrower mounting width and poorly designed stock shackles had a lot more to do with handling issues then adding a sway bar would help.

I have a CJ & a YJ that came with sway bars, but they did'nt go back on after the springover. The stiffer springs seem to take care of the problem for me. My 67' M-725 never had them. My single wheel 97' 4X4 F-350 Diesel came with sway bars frt & rear.

i dont need them. i just thought it was weird it didnt have any. like i said i dont get much lean going into corners. then again i dont fly around corners in the jeep like i do my rice burners. just couldnt believe it didnt have any.

ill take a pic for if i change my mind and want them on it. thanks pc

Just came in from the garage, but I will take one next time I go out.

ATX 66 is right. CJ needs all the help it can get. I read in forums for years they say pitch the dam thing. Wrong. I pitched mine when I went spring over. Went a few thousand miles and when I redid the front with rubicon express YJ leaves I had lots of parts to make, so I fabed up the axle top plates to accomodate the old sway bar while I was at it. I test drove that dam jeep no less than 5 times after making adjustments and made my own disconects for $5.80 CND. WOW, I say WOW. What a difference. I run bias 31" Micky Thompson mud terrains with 20 psi max pressure and I know they cause severe handeling troubles on the street. Pot holes and road bumps make the jeep have a mind of its own. With my sway bar on she will stay way straiter. Yup, matter a fact friends, put the sway bar in. If you cant make your own disconects, buy em.

Nice. You got that did ya? I needed enough space to put my beer down while working on it. Can fit a whole case on any tire. Kidding aside, It looks fine with those tires for now (they came with the heap, were put on in around 1990). I already emptied every pocket, but want to go with 35" or 36". Then I need gears, a front selectable locker and some aftermarket front axle shafts to take the strain. Bout $5,000. Thats how much I have into this jeep. Mayby next year.
I should take a picture of it to put in here for ya. Befor I deal with tires I need to finish a few other things and OBA is another plan not yet started. Bought the heap Sep. 2007 for $200. Got it plated end of Oct. 2008. I have put over 1000 hours into this CJ so far. I am quite pleased with my cheep jeep, but it is no longer considered cheep.

I found some old pictures of it but have never tried to post pictures (untill a minute ago). I guess I need to learn how one day.

Thanks CJ. I will try to find time later today or tomorrow to get that done. I have the day off today and need to go shopping for power steering stuff.

I wanted to tell you that I really like that this forum emails me when someone posts in a thread that I posted in. I never seen that before, and it is way cool. I can get back to see whats going on by checking email.

Glad you like that feature, you can turn it off if you grow tired of it by changing an option in your control panel. Also, be aware that it only shows the first reply, after that you receive no further notices until you return.

Have a good day Jeep parts hunting!

Just trying my first picture upload.

Hope you didnt think I was razzing you about it. That was not my intent. You should invite me over though cause having 4 cases of beer without a companion just isnt right. :D I think just about all of us understand the "wish list". All except Cj , he just buys whatever he needs. :D Ok enough jokes.....Wheres the pics???
