swinging tailgate

Hello , not sure if this has ever been covered but, does anybody make a kit to convert a folddown tailgate to a swinging gate.My bolts are broken or spinning in both the body and the tub.

It probably has be done but you will find that most people want to convert to the drop down. The kits are for newer Jeeps to have a tailgate like the old school.

You would probably have to reinforce but may be able to find used parts from a YJ Wrangler or TJ that you could rig. Or buy new from just about anywhere such as Morris 4x4. You would also need to figure out way to latch as those gate have a different setup.

Just grind/cut the bolts off and put some new ones in if that's the only reason you are doing. I haven't looked at closely but it can't be that tough. Maybe just have to drop the gas tank?

Thanks, it didn't look like you could get to the ones in the tub from the back. As for the one in the gate ,maybe just get a new gate because it spins and wont come loose.

I'm pretty sure when they changed from fold down to swinging tailgates they put the swinging hinge mounts in the holes originally designed for the swing out tire carrier on the CJ. I would think that all you would need is a yj tailgate, hinges and locking pin. If you look hard enough I bet you could find a local guy with a yj that would like to do the CJ tailgate conversion and trade gate, hinges and hardware.
