I'm switching tubs on my 69 CJ5 , a PITA!

What is the secret to disconnecting the steering so I can get the column out? Was hoping to switch to Saginaw steering at this time but the additional work is turning me off: new manifold, have a plow on my jeep so would need to relocate stuff for that, etc. etc.

The tub I'm switching to already has a tilt/telescoping column in it and a nicely done, modified dash to mount the column. I think it must have been set up for a different motor/engine combo as the firewall has been recessed some which screws up utilizing the existing Ross steering.

The new tub also has dual underseat gas tanks and no return line (I have a 225) any necessity to run the return?

You have to remove the bolt completely from the upper steering shaft u-joint or you will not be able to pull the steering wheel shaft. There is a groove in the steering wheel shaft that keeps the steering wheel shaft from separating unless it is completely removed.

The u-joint that connects to the steering wheel shaft has a bolt going through it. The bolt has to be completely removed to separate the two pieces. I also usually end up wedging a chisel in the u-joint flange to spread it open...
