Pretty much like it says. My 80 cj 5s tranny is dying. It's been kinda grinding into gears for a while now. And the killer is that i was driving down the highway and all of a sudden i was locked out of third. Then it started having issues getting into other gears. As i limped it a mile to my aunts house.

I took the top shifter cover off to see if i could tell what had gone wrong. Apparently the part that slides between the third an four gears got stuck. The reason was one of the three speing clips, that i assume are for tention so it doesn't jump out of gear , has come loose and now jams up and locks it into gear.

All the local parts houses are useless in this matter. They can sell me a rebuild kit. But it only has the seals in it. Or a new tranny. I could get away with switching out this one piece if i could find one. But if i have to tear it down that much. Might as well do it all.

The T 176 doesn't look that complicated. So i might try my hand at rebuilding this one myself. So any suggestions and info would be great.

But what i would really need to start with is a full rebuild kit with all the gears and goodies. Basically everthing but the outer casing. Thanks in advance for any help or info you can supply. Or if some one has a working one somewhere near St. Louis mo for cheap let me know. Thanks.

Give these folks a call.

That ones more comprehensive than the local ones. But where would i get replacement gears? A couple of the have the ends of the teeth pretty chewed up. Better to replace them while i have it apart.

Here's the little beauty makin my life hell

It is likely that you really don't new new gears. More than likely you can get away with bearings, possibly a syncro or two And replacements for the part you can see is popping up. Transmission gears chip on the ends, mostly reverse, look at all the tooth that is left in the middle.

First gear is worn on the edge a bit, not a problem. Dress the teeth where needed, and run it. :chug:
