I will be crawling under my 77 CJ7 this weekend to drain and fill Transmission and differentials. With regards to the Transmission , is there a better way other than dropping the cross member/ skid plate? I have heard people allude to this but haven't heard how. First post here, so take it easy on me if I am not doing it right!

Skid should have an access hole to the drain plug...it's on the bottom

Do yourself a favor and get one of those syringe-type deals to refill it with...you'll be glad you did

I had this combo in my '77 CJ5 . Definitely the syringe deal. Avoid the hassle and mess if you do it without it.

One other thing you might want to search is the additive in the gear oil. GL4 is what you want to use in straight cut gear applications (Transmission and tcase), especially use where yellow metals are present (synchro gears in a Transmission ).

Open the fill holes first, then have pan/funnel ready to catch used fluid when undoing drains. Then drain both. Button the drain holes back up and fill with fluid until you can feel fluid with tip of finger just inside fill hole or it starts to come back out. Button up the fill plugs and you're done.

The tranny drain is on the front near the bottom. The fill is on passenger side near the top. The Transfer Case drain is accessed through the skid plate as "j6824" said and is an inverted square nut where you use the ratchet head itself to loosen. Fill hole for the Transfer Case is on rear of Transfer Case up higher nearer the body.

Amsoil has been shipping their gear oil in heavy duty bags with a spout. Even though I don't use their oil in all my cars, I keep an empty around for times like this. Maybe just buy one... then put the rest of whatever you use in with the bag. It is simply the best thing I have ever seen for this kind of application.

This is what I have used the last 30 some years. Came with a cap on the end but removed it. Screws on to plastic quarts of gear oils. Usually I can let slow gravity feed it or just squeeze the bottles. The yellow piece is a twist valve on off.
