What gear oil is recommended for the T-176 ? I've read that GL5 gear oil will harm the yellow metals? Is Stalube 85W-90 from NAPA any good? Novak Says any good GL5 80-90W?

Any help and advice appreciated!

I have the T-176 in mine and I am running 50w oil in it. I used to run 80W but that caused some issues in the winter where I live and since I switched to 50W those problems went away. FWIW the Manual calls for 85W-90 GL5.

I just rebuilt one, but have not installed it yet. Was hoping we would get some more responses

Thank you Scout1067. Good, Bad or Ugly....I decided to go with 80W90 Valvoline GL5. I'll be changing it tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

Keep in mind that if you don't have something to direct the oil away from the drain plug when you drain the oil it makes a heck of a mess. The skid plate is just long enough that it is a total pain to drain it. I ended up rigging up a makeshift funnel out of thin cardboard and foil when I drained mine. It aint pretty but it keeps the oil from pooling on the skid plate and finding creative places to drip from.

The T-176 takes 3.5 pints of GL4 (Stalube) 85-90 or GL5 80-90
I use GL4 in my T-18 .
I would use GL5 for the T-176 because its less expensive.
Either one works.

Not to cast a fly in the ointment but I used GL5 80-90 for 35 years in a T-4 and never had a lick of problems for 238,000 miles, but several / many said because of the brass synchros that was the wrong lubricant and I should use GL4

The OEM manual calls for GL5, just sayin'

I don't doubt the service manual states GL5 for 80s manuals, that's why I said either GL4 or GL5 will work.
The service manual states GL4 for a T-18 .
There is truth that sulphur/phosphorus can be corrosive to yellow metals however, we're talking a fine coat wearing off.
In the real world there isn't a way to distinguish the yellow dust you may find when changing gear oil to say if it was normal wear, severe use wear, or wear from using GL5.
I buy GL5 by the 5 gallon bucket and use it in all my older Jeep's axles and transfer cases. The times I don't have GL4 handy for my transmissions I'll use GL5 in those as well until the next lube change when I do have GL4.
