1979 CJ7, 258 ci., T-19 tranny, Dana 300 transfer.
I have a T-18 Transmission and the clutch is starting to slip in 4th gear. I have checked all my local auto parts stores and they say that they are not able to get a clutch kit. All the kits that I find online are like 400 bucks and that is beyond my budget. If anyone has an idea that could help me out it would me much appreciated. The closest combo of a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and T-18 I can find is the 1973 Scout.

Im gonna say its a Ford Transmission after spending half the night reading on google searches. It looks to have a plate between the between the engine and bellhousing that is home made. Ive been mechanicing since I was about 17 years old but never worked on cj's much. My research found that im gonna need a 11" clutch with a 10 spline 1 1/6 input shaft. They say to tell the counter guy its a 78-79 Ford truck clutch. I know this is a no no but the throw out is quite and the pressure plate seems to be fine, so Im probably just gonna throw a disc in it. My Jeep is just a toy that does light wheeling and runs around town.

My best guess is that I have a 300 transfer due to the fact the tag on the transfer, the top number starts as 300.

Hey I just replaced my clutch and pressure plate recently on my Ferd fteen thousand. Aka T-18 . $180 from Clutch exchange. The old timer who owns this shop is familiar with this conversion he knows exactly what you need.

Reviving this from 4 years ago for a couple quick questions. Background: My 78 CJ5 with a T18a sat in the yard for a year (please don't judge me...newlywed and I let my bachelorhood hobby sit while we enjoyed our first year). Went to fire it up and move it into the driveway, so I can start returning it to decent shape. Slapped a fresh battery in it and she fired right up. Went to put it into gear, and the clutch isn't disengaging. There's a fairly quiet, moderate pitched whine when the clutch pedal is pushed in. I THINK this is a throwout bearing problem.
Questions:
1. I think the clutch kit I need is the 11" with the 1 1/16", 10 spline input shaft. Correct?
2. Is there anything else I should replace while I'm under there?
3. How difficult is this gonna be?

Thanks.

:)
Before you order or buy any parts.........pull it apart and see what you have.

Moisture could have gotten on the candlestick and rusted some parts together , but without taking it apart were all just guessing..........if it worked before it should work again and perhaps only needing something small.

Clutch disc is stuck to the flywheel. Pretty common.
Engine OFF-Put tranny in 1st gear. Push clutch in and with the clutch pushed in. Have a couple of folks push/rock the jeep front to back.
If it doesn't move-Try 4th gear.
Good luck and please keep us updated.

Do you have a mechanical or hydraulic clutch mechanism? A mechanical clutch will be unaffected by sitting, hydraulic, not so much.

Lumpy is probably right on this one.

^^^^ What they said. Your clutch disk is most likely 'stuck' to the flywheel or pressure plate. Or both. R&R time unless you can break it loose by the way LG posted.

Good luck and report back.

Update: father in law came over and we rocked it in 1st, 3rd, 4th, reverse in accordance with LG's instructions. Got it on the road in front of the house and tried pulling it free and it's really seized up. Any other recommendations before I drop the tranny?

That fork travel is good.
Think you're gonna have to pull the 'box'.
My SWAG is, the disc is rusted to the input shaft.
Please post some pictures when your 'inside'.
Confirm this, that when in neutral-You can push the jeep.

Ok thanks for the advice. It'll be about a month and a half before I have somebody to help pull the tranny. This is my first time doing this, so I don't want to get too ballsy and end up hurting myself or damaging the input shaft getting it down. Will let you know as soon as I have it off and take a look.

Tranny not hard to 'pull'. Lots of GOOGLE info out there.
A good floor jack will do the job. I sit the rear wheels on 12" high wood boards and then roll the tranny out the back end.
Do remember to disco the battery-

Ok, LG et al, I got my Transmission and Transfer Case pulled, slapped a new friction plate and clutch assembly on. Trying to clean all the 39 years of crud and gunk off. That's the worst. When I removed the Transfer Case from the Transmission , I noticed this spring. Looks like it's part of a seal that goes around the Transmission output. I can't find any part numbers or anything in any diagrams I'm looking at. Help?

That is a typical seal lip spring.

So I need to replace the seal? I couldn't find on morris or 4 wheel parts.
