Well, almost. I was changing out the worn clutch linkage yesterday, and thought it was time to change the fluid in the T-5 Transmission . I knew that it had gear oil in it, and also knew that ATF was what it came with from the factory. I did a few Google searches to see what people were running and came across a thread from another Jeep forum with alot of different advice. The one that stuck out was a post by a guy who said that he'd built T-4 's&5's for over 20 years. He admitted that they indeed had their issues, but recommended Penzoil Syncromesh for the fluid. He touched on all the problems that I was having by using gear oil, hard shifts, grinding, wont go into gear etc. Well, I put it in and was blown away by the immediate difference. Ive never been able to put it in reverse from idling in neutral without grinding, so that was my first test. Passed with flying colors! No more gear noise while idling, smooth as butter shifts. I'm looking forward to a nice long freeway road test to see how everything is , will report back later tonight as I'm headed out the door to test run :D

Good job man!
People that use 80w90 in their T-4 /T-5 aren't aware that it eats the syncros and doesn't properly lube the small bearings.

I've heard great things about the Syncromesh. Im not sure if it was around when I was still running the T-5 . I mistakenly ran gear oil in it when I first acquired the CJ 20 years ago (before the first tranny rebuild) and got to see the results when we tore it down....
When I rebuilt it the 2nd time due to a broken intermediate, at least the internals looked a lot better having ran Dexron III in it. Bearings were in way better shape, no pitting on the synchros etc..

There was a post a few mounths back about someone wanting to know what fluid to use in a T-5 -T-4 and I said atf. But the rest of the replies said 80-90w gear oil. Now at least I know I was right.:D And don't feel bad about putting out wroung info!!:):chug: I'm glad you got her working. Thats what matters!

Like CJim7 said, stick with regular 80/90w. A couple guys in the thread I mentioned said they tried the Syncromesh in T-18 's and bad things started happening.

Test run report:
At this point,it just keeps getting better. The only pre fluid change ailment that hasnt gone away, but is greatly reduced is the shift from 3rd to 4th. Before I would have to wait 2 seconds or more to shift 3 to 4 without grinding, and I could never downshift 5 to 4. Now,as long as I dont try and speed shift 3 to 4 is fine. The curious part is there's no grinding anymore downshifting 5 to 4. The difference is nothing short of amazing :chug:
