Snagged a 71 v6 CJ5 a while back and finally making time to work on it. Currently has D27 up front and offset flanged Dana 44 in the rear.

In looking for 11” rear brakes (wanted the e-brake capability), I found a Dana 30 front and centered Dana 44 rear from a 73 commando. I also picked up a Dana 20 at the same time.

I’m trying to decide if it’s easier to rebuild the Dana 20 Transfer Case and then use the centered Dana 44 . I say that as the centered axle has already been reworked and my offset has not.

Other option is certainly to rebuild the current D18 and current offset Dana 44 and just move the brakes over.

Since I’m not planning to need any real crawling potential or too concerned about my differentials not following one another, are there other downsides to this I’m not thinking of at this time? All axles are 3.73.

Thanks!

Either way would be fine since you are not planning to do any serious off roading with it. Obviously, using the original components keep it "correct" if that has any bearing on your decision. I am pretty sure that the Commando axles are around 1 1/2" to 2" wider than the CJ axles. I'm sure someone will chime in with an affirmative answer to this. Just be aware that could end up being a lot of additional work switching over, and your tires will stick out further. Also driveshafts may have to be changed, steering components may factor in, among other things.

We are doing something similar with a 59 CJ5 using 1975 Dana 44 & Dana 30 axles. Started with stock axles, changed our minds, and the project suddenly took on a life of it's own. Still not finished!

The 71 has drum e-brake capability, 71 did not come with a Transmission e-brake.
If it were me I would keep the D18 and the offset rear flange 44. The flange 44 was only offered in 70.5-71.
If there is an axle you want to change it would be the front 27 for a 30 with disc brakes. That's exactly what I had on my 71.
