1985 CJ7 . When I turn on the power the temp gauge goes straight to hot. Also when I turn on the power the fuel gauge shoots right to fill and then drops back a little. When I turn off the power the fuel needle drops right back to empty. I don't know for sure how much gas is in it. I bought the jeep with no gauges working. These gauges are doing this without the speedometer housing being grounded. When I do ground the speedo housing it makes no difference. Also where is the oil pressure sending unit located. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Scott.

At some point someone is going to ask you to fill out your profile with what all is in that 85 CJ7 . It might as well be me. :)

As far as the oil pressure sender, on my 78 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l its on the passenger side of the engine, near the back. I don't know if that's a universal location or not.

jpeck71 I just filled out my profile. Thanks for the info on oil sender. I believe its the round unit on the right side at the rear of the block. I may just replace it I have an account with Sanel auto parts it cant cost that much. Would make eliminating it that much easyer. Thanks Scott.

Yep, that would be it. And they aren't that expensive. Around $10 I think, maybe less. I currently don't have a gauge in mine so I'm not sure if my sender works or not either and haven't put the meter on it to take measurements.

It's on my list of things to do that i've researched.

Ok now the big question. Now that I know that my fuel and temp gauges are junk where is the best place to buy new gauges. Morris 4x4 or is there someplace better. Thanks for any info.

You are better off finding good used OEM the aftermarket stuff is :dung:.

Thanks mtnwhlr Where should I look e bay or amazon places like that.

Have you checked to ensure the gauges are bad? The temp gauge issue sounds like a bad sending unit. As far as the fuel gauge, this could be a sending unit as well. :chug:

I have a Jeep salvage yard by me that I got one from but if aren't as lucky I think you can find one on Ebay or watch CL.

These gauges are not the originals. I will replace the sending unit for the temp where that is cheap. These gauges are the type that snap into the back of the spedo housing if you know what I mean. I will do a test on the tank sending unit checking the grounds. I think I have papers on how to check that I will post results if I can figure it out. Thanks for the help Scott.
