Got an opportunity for a good deal on a swap in 14 bolt rear in the right ratio that already has one installed, so I was hoping to pick the brains of those who are running them...

Other than learning the difference in how it will handle and the chirp of turns/tight curves...and cons to it at all?

I know guys are running them up front...wasn't so sure about out back.
If I'd be better off... say, moving it up front and going with a selectable in the rear... I'd like to know ahead of time so I can have it done prior to install.

Just as soon not do this more than once...unnecessarily, that is

Thanks in advance

The regular Detroit is a fun beast just takes a little getting used to, no sharp turns on the gas it will bind up and make a nice loud bang for you

I see your currently running 33” tires are you planning to go larger 38” and up with your new 8 bolt rims? If not you will be dragging the diff on rocks often.

You won’t be able to move the Detroit up front unless your going with another 14 bolt diff. You would need to add everything from the tube out including custom shafts.

I’ve run Detroits in the rear of several of my CJs, I’m currently running a selectable in the rear. Although the Detroit was never a problem and I wouldn’t hesitate to run another one the selectable locker is nice to run on the road although they come with their own drawbacks mostly offroad.

Yes...going up in tire size, rims, brakes...essentially a rebuild

Yeah...not sure what I was thinking about moving it...disregard. I've got a hp 60 pumpkin that I was gonna have retubed and built to go up front

Just wanted to get feedback before I did something I'd end up regretting

Appreciate the input.

Just make sure the rear tires have the EXACT air pressure.
DL's 'drive from the inside wheel in a turn. That's why they 'chirp' tires.
Been run'n front and rear DL's for 27+ yrs in my CJ.
Will never run anything else.........

I have Detroits front and back but it’s not a daily driver. Off road they are simple and effective. On road you will get some some chirping around corners and of course more tire wear. If it’s not a daily driver and your not doing a lot of ice driving you are good. If you are I’d suggest a ARB if you can afford it.

Mine is my DD and you learn to 'adjust' your driving to lessen the 'effects'(noises)of the DL....LOL
