1980 CJ-7 Laredo. 258 Inline Six with one barrel carb. 4 Speed Manual Transmission. Bone Stock!, 2001 Ford F-150 4x4., 1970 MACH 1 Mustang, 1989 Mazda B2600I 4x4, 1980 Kawasaki KZ 750.
So my 1980 CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l inline six has a ticking noise that I believe is coming from either a bad or sticking lifter or pushrod.

I'm getting ready to change the oil and had considered running some MMA through for a few hundred miles first. The oil in it is from 2015 but only has about 500 miles on it. I've had the Jeep parked for the majority of that time due to a clutch linkage issue. Now that I've replaced the linkage and gotten that sorted out I want to start driving it more and want to address the ticking noise.

I'm also wandering if it would be worth the money and agrevation to change my intake and one barrel carb for a 2 barrel or even 4 barrel setup.

I'm going to try and add some videos of the Jeep running.

Well that didn't work. I will try and upload from my laptop when I get home.

How many miles on the engine?
What weight oil do you use?
Take the jeep for a 50-75 mile drive and see if it quiets down any.
Make sure the oil level is at the top of the dip-stick mark.

The Jeep shows 40000 on the odometer I would say 140000 is more accurate.

I used 10w30 in it when I changed it in the fall of 2015.

Now I have driven the Jeep and kept it started, but it has sat for uo to 3 or 4 weeks at a time without starting or moving over the last 2 years. My nephew and I replaced all the clutch linkage and Transmission mount in July and I have driven it around 20 or 30 miles per week since then.

The ticking can just be heard in the cab at idle whether warm or cold. It's a little louder cold but never really goes away at idle. When the engine rpm are up while driving the ticking is drowned out by road noise.

When you change the oil and filter(Wix)try either 20w-40 or 20w-50 oil.
When I had a slight ticking. I put in a can of Restore(6 cly size)and the tic stopped within 100 miles of driving, and has never returned.
You should run a compression test. ;)

I'm going to run a compression test and hook up a good mechanical oil pressure gauge as the factory electric one is dead. After I get those readings as a base line I will change the oil and filter and run it 100 miles or so and retake the compression and oil pressure readings.

Quick question on the oil weight ( Not trting to start a debate ), but it gets down into the teens here overnight during the winter months. Will 20w40 or 20w50 be to thick for those temps during start up?

I guess with the engine potentially having 140000 thicker oil will probably help. I will check my oil pressure and compression before I change the oil and report back here what I find.

I did verify it was full up to the line today before I drove it.

Shell Rotella 15W-40 would be a good choice.
Do NOT expect the OEM oil pressure gauge or sender to be accurate.
Get one of these-

So I am struggling to upload anything to the site. Either from my phone or PC. I can't even figure out how to add a link. I can only reply or post through taptalk for some reason so no video of The Jeep running.

I do have the video up on you tube under 1980 Jeep CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 6cyl ticking noise if you can find it and care to listen

Thanks for the link to the gauges too by the way. I found a mechanical gauge at O'Reilly similar to the one you linked, but I like the one you linked better so I may order one just to have the different face plate options.

Do you know if that gauge will fit in the factory dash spot for the oil gauge?

There isn't a video called "1980 Jeep CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 6cyl ticking noise" that I can find or even "1980 Jeep CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l " within the last month. What is your Youtube user name?

I did findthis video under "1980 Jeep CJ7 ticking noise
", is this you?

Yep that's me that's the video thank you so much. By the way I fixed the oil leak it was the valve cover loose it shows the oil on the manifold in the video but I've already taken care of that

That gauge should fit OK-Maybe just the touch of a rat-tail file is all the dash hole needs.
That 'tic' sounds more like an exhaust leak to my bad ears.
Put a wrench to the manifold bolts.
Check the exhaust down-pie connection.

The iddling seems rough in the video but it does smooth out once she warms up. I will check the bolts this week as well as the down pipe. Thanks for the reply

Oh and Thanks CJ for adding the link.

The oil in it is from 2015 but only has about 500 miles on it.

With the reduction of miles it very well could to a top end noise especially where it's been sitting for awhile.
The first thing I noticed was the sound coming from your exhaust pipe in the beginning of the video. The sound makes be believe you have issues with your valves, sticky or otherwise.

Take a piece of paper and hold it close to the end of the exhaust pipe, if it flaps around you have a valve problem. The valves would cause a ruff idle as well and be less apparent off idle (similar to your symptoms).

After testing I would dump the oil and replace one quart of oil with one quart of MMO. Run it for a 1000 miles and dump it. It may take a couple of oil changes to see results.

If you have a vacuum gauge post up your readings.

:agree:
Following Posi's train of thought. :notworthy:
Remove the valve cover, and make sure a push-rod isn't 'loose', as not in a rocker arm.
I wasn't sure if that sound came from the tail pipe or was an echo.
The sound at the engine bay is what got me thinking about an exhaust leak-MAYBE.
If everything else ck's out-Go with the MMO mix. The stuff is magical........

Thanks for the info. I will check the exhaust as well as pull the valve cover to be sure I don't have a bent valve or damaged pushrod/rocker arm.

I uploaded 2 more videos to my you tube channel that show the noise after the Jeep has warmed up. I'm sorry for the camera on my phone going all sideways. I may not be able to do any more testing until this coming weekend, but I will keep you all posted.

I'm leaning with LG as it being a exhaust leak. But with it sitting so much if some bad gas has been run through it you may have a stuck valve and bent push rod. It would be worth the time to pull the valve cover and make sure everything is ok.
