My tilt steering column jiggles up and down slightly at the joint and would like to tighten it up.

Did a search and found postings here and elsewhere with links to write-ups but those pages had long gone to 404, RIP. From some of the discussions it sounded like it was an intensive break down of the column to find the bolts to tighten? Was hoping it was as simple as locking down one bolt under a plastic cover like on my old POS ford escort from college.

It's not dangerous, just a nuisance right now.

Neuner,
You must completely disassemble the column to get the 4 bolts that are loose, you will need a wheel puller- lock plate compressor- and a pivot pin puller- e8 torx socket- posidrive #2 or care full with a #2 Phillips- 4 drops of lock tight.
Can PM you with a pictorial step by step disassembly and reassembly.

:censored:, hoping it would be easier than that.

Yes, please send.

Can not send a big file, already asked admin to let me post this tear down and rebuild. Since a lot of columns have this problem.
Here is the part that wobbles.
Could post 5 pictures at a time.

Like GARGOYLE said, you have to disassemble the top half of the column. It is a bit time consuming but worth it as it will continue to loosen up with time. It is a standard GM tilt column (videos are on youtube also) and a lot of guys have made good money tightening them up for people over the years so if you dont want to do it yourself you should be able to find plenty of people around to do it :chug:

It's possible to do the job without all the high speed / low drag specialty tools. It ain't fun, though (ask me how I know!!!!!).

For example, if I remember right (long time since I did it the hard way) I used a longer screw with matching threads to twist into the pivot pin. Then I clamped on the screw head with a pair of vise grip pliers and used a hammer to knock the pivot pin out of place. Gotta think outta the box if you're too stingy to get the right tools for the job!

The snap ring at the top of the column is always the biggest pain in the :censored: for me to get back on unless the better half is there to push it into place while I compress all the junk down.

When you get to those dang bolts. Pull one at a time, each of'em out and put a big drop of blue 242 loctite on each and tighten them down.

Sent you big file,
Sorry about the wait had issues with my e-mail account, getting to much spam, and some one trying to hack it. Also have assembly. Was going to make a PDF, and do it over again, this was done 3 or 4 years ago when I was doing them on a regular basis. Remember this is a complete tear down, but you do not need to remove column from Jeep if you do not want to or tear completely apart. Have enough parts to assemble three more tilts, with a lot of left overs.
Hope this helps.

Just trying to fix the world one Jeep at a time.

Thanks! I'll look for it.

Complete tear-down may come in handy. Do want to investigate a very small amount of play in the steering that I'll probably do at the same time.

Right now I have a variable ratio PS box off a J-10 pickup, and I am going to build a intermediate shaft with 3/4" DD collapsible tube with PTO u-joints at each end to remove the pinned in joint at the column and the bell coupler at the box. I have the parts, but I am busy trying to get my 2A done.

Sent you big file,

**edit** just got it. Thanks!!

Just to let you know I haven't received it yet. Checked spam and it's not there either.

If it's a pdf and too big, I can break it down into parts and distribute to anyone who wants it.

I would love a copy. That would be fantastic....
I havent logged on in about 6 months, (life has gotten in the way) but I specifically jumped on here tonight because my tilt column is doing the exact same thing. About a month ago I noticed a slight up / down "wiggle". It is getting a bit worse and am concerned that one day it might just come apart...If it does, I'm sure it wont happen conveniently in my driveway !!!

Don`t worry, it will not fly apart just wobble all over the place, like grandpas tractor driving over tree stumps.

I'm having the same issue with my '79 CJ5 . Could you send me a copy of this as well?

Thanks in advance!
