Yes it can and has been done, The ones I have seen use a mid-late 70s GM version.

I was looking on eBay the other day and found a fella in the northeast that re-mans them with all new switches and stuff and new keys. Can't remember the exact details, but the price was around $400-700 and came with a warranty.

They didn't look half bad, but I haven't worked with him...yet.

This won't be too expensive Dear! That's what I keep saying. Over and over again.

pull one from a Cherokee, almost a plug and play.

A place to start.

Would you mind telling us the price for that? I understand if you don't want to put your business out on the street, but a PM to me would be great as I am looking at the same option in a few months.

No problem,He charged me 165.00 for the swap out,It is a salvage yard near me,Mudd Duck auto parts in Cahokia,Illinois,If I can help you let me know,Rippy

A 92, 93 chevy blazer column will bolt right up. In fact the adapter for the steering wheel is the same as the cj.

So now the search is on! Only thing that works/is intact on my steering column is the key!:chug:

My 1980 CJ5 was bone stock but if you looked real close at the center of the steering wheel there was a little teeny weeny bow tie. Jeep begged, borrowed, and stole parts from whomever they could get them from. I’m not sure about the 93-93 Blazer as rr41mag states but it makes complete sense as GM did supply steering columns to Jeep that were used in CJ for several years. I picked up a tilt wheel column from a parted out CJ7 .

This info saves me a new post. I bought a second-hand Grant steering wheel with GM adapter, and saw an eBay auction that lists the same adapter for CJ5 as for GM. Was wondering if the GM would bolt right up to my column. Looks like it will. (Haven't pulled the old wheel yet because I'm a driveway mechanic and the weather has been cold and wet.)

Whenever I have a question like this I look up the parts online. I found out that the grant steering wheels interchange with jeep when I worked aat orielly.

Similar question. Just bought 84 CJ7 has tilt wheel (original I assume?) but the wheel lock lever is very stiff. How difficult are these to work on?

They aren't hard to work on I would try spraying some WD40 in it first and working it back and forth.

X2
but spray through the slot where the release lever is

question......Is the release lever the stiff part or the moving around ?

Thanks, I'll try a little wd40. Sometimes it works wonders but this feels like there is some obstruction like it is rubbing on something like rubber and we are talking about the key release and lock lever.

spraying may help but if there is other issues........

the key release lever is touching the rack
and connected to the rack is the sector (WHICH IS PLASTIC)
when you turn the key you also push the rod down on the ignition switch that has plastic parts as well

now the key switch has tumblers and springs which is capped
and that cap can come loose and it will feel rubbery especially if the springs come out and wedge in the lock
as well as it also connects with the rack and sector

maybe we need to narrow down where this "feeling" is coming from

gonna bump an old thread. I was working on an 82 chevy full size truck and thought how much the column looks like my 80 CJ5 . Mybe i'll hunt up an early 80's tilt for my cj
