The IGNITION ACTUATOR in my '82 CJ broke. I found a replacement however, I have hit a wall in figuring out how to re-install this new metal slide. The original broke, so of course after I took off the steering wheel and began take off piece by piece to see why my ignition tumbler was free spinning, the pieces fell out.

Has anyone ever had to replace this before?
this metal slide is on the driver side of the steering column, found only in the tilt wheel option. When the key is turned, the tumbler also turns a slotted cylinder that engages the teeth on this metal piece, the piece slides, completing the circuit for ignition.

Had one of those pop in the old '80 CJ5 . I was WAY back in the desert hunting Doves. No one knew where I was and no cell phones existed back then. Luckily the steering wheel unlocked and I was able to hot wire it. To get me home. As it turned out I didn't need to hot wire anything. There is a rod that runs down the steering column to a remote switch that actually does all the work. Pull the rod with a pair of pliers and you are in the CJ stealing business, that is if the steering wheel is unlocked.

When I repaired mine I went ahead and rebuilt the whole column with new bushings and such. The Column was much better after the rebuild. If I remember correctly the manual was of GREAT help and you need to follow it closely. Not hard work, but fiddly with one piece going in after the other in a very specific order. Good luck, if you don't have a real service manual buy one and I'm sure you can get it done.

HH is correct - not difficult but tedious. Be careful enough when you get to the bearing - it's a bunch of loose balls in a tray race - use a magnet to pull it out it you'll be thankful you did.
