Hi guys I'm trying to reinstall the timing cover on my 1980 CJ5 with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l inline 6. I have a fel pro gasket kit. My problem is the rubber gasket that comes with the kit to go between the timing cover and the oil pan. With the rubber gasket installed, the cover does not align properly with the bolt holes in the block. I can't push it enough with my hands to get them to align. I can install the oil pan bolts first, which does help pull the cover down somewhat, but not enough to get all of the holes to align. To make this worse,
I'd like to get the cover on loose enough to be able to use the harmonic balancer to center the cover.

Is there some trick to installing the rubber oil pan to timing cover gasket? I'm considering just using black RTV, but am afraid it will leak. I'd hate to drop the oil pan, since I don't want to have to mess around with a Jack and the engine mount.

I would really appreciate any advice you all have!

Double check that you have the right gasket. When I did my timing chain replacement, I had no problems. Use the block numbers to insure what model and year your block is.
