3 years with my 83 CJ and have never touch the Transmission . Getting tough to shift into 1st and 2nd when cold, so I figured a fluid change/fill was a good place to start.

Read through all the posts on which fluid to use until my eyes were starting to bleed and head about to explode, so I will not even go there now.

Started the fluid change process with step one - make sure the fill plug will come out. Got it out and fluid started pouring out. Lots. From what I've read, the proper level is to fill until the fluid just starts to come out.

Should I be concerned about the amount of "fluid" that came out from the fill hole? Not sure if fluid is the right word since it was more like a chocolate milk shake. Have not drained the rest yet.

As always, thanks for the words of wisdom.

chocolate milk means it had water in it..drain it an refill it at the least..I have seen people wash them out with everything from diesel to automatic Transmission fluid..Don't know what is actually recommended ..

10-4 on the water, how ever much fluid came out of the fill hole is probably how much water is in there. I hope your Transmission is still ok.
Now would be a good time to check everything else for water also.

:agree:^^ time for a total fluid change, tranny, TC and both axles. I use mineral spirits for wash out myself but diesel sounds good too. I take the top off the tranny so I could fill it to the top and let it set for a bit before draining it. as far as what to fill it with any gear lube is fine, some use non detergent 30 wt. I would not use the high dollar synthetics as this is going to happen again and draining $40 worth of synthetic from an axle after crossing a stream of spending time in a mud hole can make you very sad. Remember, chocolate milk shake happens.:D

Thanks for the quick replies!!!!

Makes sense that the level of fluid was high if water was mixed in. I'm not sure if it was much water since the fluid didn't seem to have that milky look to it, just think and brown.

Tranny seems to be working good up until the kind of tough shifting recently, so hope a flush (or two) and fluid change will help. I'll work my way over to the Transfer Case and diffs as I go.

Thanks again.

I have to do some googling but I read a thread once where a guy used kerosene to clean/flush out the tranny. I think he filled it up with kerosene, put the TC in N, started the engine, and ran it through the gears. Then drained and allowed enough time for the residue to evaporate and then refillled the tranny with fluid. DOnt know if there is anything to that but I was thinking about trying it.

I wouldn't use kerosene.. Deisel maybe.. Definitely not gasoline. Do you keep your jeep uncovered? I would also be concerned about how the water got into your Transmission if it was actually water there to begin with. Keep in mind some people will fill from the top if they have their shifter out to save from the hassle of loading from the bottom. Could have easily been just an over fill.

I changed all the fluids on mine over the weekend and I filled the tranny from the top. However when I took it for a test drive the gearbox felt very hot. I think I might have overfilled it so will drain it as soon as I have a a gap.

The Transfer Case was filled from the fill hole at the back but when I got home the one cup sitting at the back that covers the rods popped off and fluid started draining from there?

Can the overfilling of the Tranny cause it to be hot and cause the transfer box to leak out of the top shafts?

I filled everything with 80w90 GL5? Normally I could hold my hand for about 10s on the box but after the change I could barely touch the box.

Kerosene has been used to flush machinery for, well about for ever. It cleans, but has enough oil in it to keep things from damage and it doesn't have harsh chemicals to damage delicate parts. I think a liberal combination of kerosene and marvel mystery oil would clean up a Transmission wonderfully. Fill it up, put the Transfer Case in neutral and run her through the gears a bunch of times and drain while she's hot.

...... foolish question. Are you sure you removed the filler plug and not the drain plug?

I know this from articles I've read on Harley Davidson oils. One of the ways a motor or Transmission keeps cool is for the oil to take heat away from moving parts. Some oils move heat better than others. It is very possible that a change in oil could move more heat and make your Transfer Case feel hotter. Over filling might make oil leak from breather holes making a mess, but in a Transmission oil is just moving around or flowing I can't inagine there would be much real pressure in a Transmission case.
